Cossart Gordon Madeira, 1934

Bual Madeira

A bottling of Madeira from the 1934 from Cossart, the oldest company in the Madeira wine business.
Sercial is the name of a white grape grown in Portugal, especially on the island of Madeira. It has given name to the dryest of the four classic varieties of Madeira fortified wine.

The anglicised name Sercial came to be associated with the Madeira style rather than the grape variety, being the lightest, most acidic and delicate expression of Madeira that takes the longest to mature.

The oldest established Madeira Wine company, was founded in 1745 by William Gordon and Francis Newton. In 1808 William Cossart an Irishman of Huguenot descent joined the firm that later came to be known by its present name.

Cossart Gordon Madeira, 1934

Cossart's
Verdelho- Madeira

A bottling of Madeira from the 1934 from Cossart, the oldest company in the Madeira wine business.
Established in 1745, Cossart Gordon & Co. represents the oldest company in the Madeira trade. It was originally founded by Scotsmen, Grancis Newton and William Gordon, who were later joined by William Cossart in 1808. The company established a reputation as suppliers of the finest of Madeiras mainly due to their trade relationship with American colonies.

This variety requires deep soils with some degree of moisture. It has low yields per ha and early ripening. Grapes are normally picked by the end of September, and produce gold coloured medium dry elegant wines which have a tropical and exotic character.

Fonseca Port, 1934

Vintage Port, Douro
Very Top Shoulder

The house of Fonseca traces its origins to the early nineteenth century. The first evidence of the firm trading in Port is an entry dated 8th April, 1815, in the ledgers of the Real Companhia Velha, the royal monopoly company. This records the purchase of 32 pipes of Port by the firm’s founder, João dos Santos Fonseca. His first documented sale occurred on 14th September, 1815, followed in 1816 by his first overseas shipment.

James Suckling, in his authoritative book on Vintage Port, put it as follows: 'The vintage Ports of Fonseca are perhaps the most consistently great of them all. Not only do they have a striking fleshiness and powerful richness when young, but they retain that youthfulness for decades.

Niepoort Port, 1934

Colheita Port 1934 Vintage, DOC Douro
** 99 Points- Robert Parker **

Colheita Port Storage and Serving Advice:
Colheita Port should be stored in a cool and dry place, sheltered from light and temperature fluctuations, and the bottle should remain in an upright position. If stored correctly, Colheita Ports will keep for decades in the bottle. Over time, it is natural that a little sediment will form at the bottom of a bottle of colheita Port wine. Once opened colheita Port should be stored in a fridge and should be consumed within 3 months. Colheita Ports do not require decanting and are best served at a temperature between 14 and 16°C.

Quinta do Noval, 1934

Vintage Port, DOC Douro
Very top shoulder

The name Quinta do Noval first appeared in records in 1715.
The history of Quinta do Noval is marked by the actions of visionaries:
António José da Silva, a merchant from Vila Nova de Gaia, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894 after it had been devastated by phylloxera. He restructured the property by replanting its vineyards.

Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, his son-in-law, was the author of a vast set of innovations, transforming the old narrow terraces into wider terraces, which are a distinctive feature of Noval, with its whitewashed stairs. These terraces allow for more efficient use of land and better sun exposure, and were considered revolutionary at the time.

"Deep orange with a brown hue. Treacle and floral perfume on the nose, incredibly dense and intense albeit a little smelly. Dark brown sugar on the palate, with plums and damsons; dense and full-bodied. Deep flavoured aftertaste, big and burly and with an intense finish. Very impressive port."

Sandeman, 1934

Sandeman 1934, DOC Douro
Neck label
Bottled in 1936 by Findlater, Mackie & Co Ltd, Hove

It all started in 1790 when the 25-year-old son of a Scottish prosperous cabinetmaker asked for a 300£ loan from his father to set up as a wine merchant in London.
This ambitious young man was George Sandeman, the founder of Sandeman, who ended up establishing one of the world’s leading Port and Sherry wine businesses.

From early on Sandeman specialised in these two great Iberian fortified wines and, following a usual practice in those days, began trading not from own offices but from Tom’s Coffee house, on Birchin Lane, London. Business was agreed on a ‘gentleman’s word’ and George soon gained an impeccable reputation, characteristic of The House of Sandeman to today.
