Madeira, 1948

MBV - Barbeito bottled - Malvasia

This is a rare and limited release of the 1948 Madeira from the family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1948 Malvasia is very dry as one would expect from this style of Madeira. There is a huge amount happening on the complexity front with some bitter nut skin notes with dried flowers and citrus pith. Although quite dry, this does not come across as too severe. An electric wine that is astonishingly refreshing. Massive finish that goes on and on.

Madeira, 1940

Justino's - Sercial

Founded in 1870, Justino’s is one Madeira’s oldest producers. This mature 1940 Sercial madeira wine is made from the noble sercial variety with grapes sourced from all over the island. The wine is fortified with neutral distilled grape spirit and aged in wood where it’s gently heated in a process known as estufagem to create the signature style.

This 1940 vintage Sercial Madeira resembles a Tawny Port in colour, yet the nose has pronounced citrus aromas, and as the wine ages the aromatic profile becomes similar to old dry Rieslings. The palate is dry, starts with lemons and oranges and develops nutty flavours with maturity.

Leacock's - verdelho

John Leacock sailed to Madeira from the United Kingdom (after the death of his father) in 1741 and at the age of 15 became the youngest apprentice at the firm of Madeira merchants, Catanach and Murdoch staying until his contract expired on 11 March 1749. During his apprenticeship he had been in constant contact with an old school friend, John Patient, residing at that time in Charles Town, South Carolina who suggested that they themselves should commence trading. Leacock agreed and this marks the birth of the now world famous company.

Madeira, 1921

Manuel de Faria, Velho Meio Seco 1921

Recorked, rewaxed capsules. Labelled. Levels into neck Tasting note: Bottled 1997, recorked/rewaxed 2015. Closed nose, touch ethereal, sweet plums, zoet, opening up nice after half an hour in the glass. Soft medium rich taste, caramel in after taste. Intense powerful, very nice strength, old wood. Pronounced aftertaste of apple syrup with touch of acidity peeking through the sweet fruit. Nice balance and natural concentration from long cask aging. Last tasted April 2014 before lunch at the owners house. Same bottle at a pre sale tasting in New York later that year showed very well, double decanted in the morning.

Madeira, 1910

Barbeito bottled - Sercial

94 Points - Neal Martin - The Wine Advocate: "The 1910 Sercial has a tightly coiled bouquet with notes of walnut, nutmeg, white pepper and dried quince that demonstrates great clarity. The aromas become increasingly spicy in the glass, but never volatile. The palate is silky smooth, with laser-like acidity that slices through copious layers of dried honey, lemongrass, sour lemon, cumin and a touch of fennel. It has superb weight and presence, almost searing in sharpness towards the finish. This is an untamed, compelling Sercial."

Madeira, 1895

Araujo - Malvasia - bott. Barbeito, Madeira

This is a rare and limited release of the 1895 Madeira from the Araujo family cellars. The bottles are in perfect condition. There is something ethereal about tasting such a rare vintage. The 1895 Malvasia is very sweet as one would expect from this style of Madeira. The Malvasia grapes which produce Malmsey are typically grown in warm coastal locations at low altitude, particularly at Câmara de Lobos, whose name (meaning 'the chamber of wolves') belies its status as a peaceful fishing village. The grape variety retains its acidity as it develops sugar, and as a consequence, Madeira Malvasia wines are some of the most long-lived in the world.

Lomelino Madeira Sercial Solera

This is an incredible fortified wine made from the Sercial grape variety aged in a solera system whereby maturing barrels are topped up with younger wines to build balance and complexity whilst also increasing their elegance and freshness. After spending around half a century in casks it was put into demi-johns prior to bottling. It is wonderfully scented with notes of dried fruits, citrus peel, coffee grounds and spices.
