Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened. The 1975 Dows Vintage Port is from a vintage that has been long under-rated. I have had repeated tastings of the 75's and whilst not in the same class as the 66 or 70 vintages, nevertheless present an outstanding quality vs price buy. When you consider that recent releases retail around the £80-£90 mark and need 20 years of storage before drinking this represents a bargain. Decanted for 4 hours, the 1975 Dows is fully mature with a nice tawny colour. The recent bottles I have tasted have been very nicely developed and drinking perfectly now. Everything is very well integrated the fruit has mellowed to become a classic vintage port. …

Gewürztraminer, Hengst Grand Cru, Alsace

The Hengst Grand Cru enjoys an old reputation for being the place to grow Gewurztraminer. The combination of a high lime content calcareous soil, some marl, a warm and dry setting, but not too precocious, provide the best conditions possible for this difficult grape variety. It was very saddening to see these old vines being hailed early July and in consequence, loose about half the crop. Perhaps the very small crop also allowed producing this wine? Who knows, but the result was a beautiful crop of dense, bright orange coloured grapes (modern clones are dark pink/red but less interesting). Interestingly, this wine fermented in two times, only finishing at the end of the 2011 harvest with a medium off dry sweetness. …

Domaine et Terroirs du Sud, Maury

This 1959 Maury may ultimately turn out to be Philippe Gayral's greatest find. It comes from the oldest parcels of Grenache Noir and Carignan and spent 40 years in wooden foudres. It has a lucid amber hue. The bouquet is utterly sublime: red plum, Hoisin, mulberry, burnt toffee, stewed Clementines and just a hint of VA giving it life. Wonderful! The palate is beautifully balanced with disarming fine, almost filigree tannins. Stewed red fruit, fig jam, tayberry, Moroccan spices and quince suffuse this Maury that has outstanding length and delineation. The 300 bottles produced are due to be released later this year. …

The Domaine de Chevalier 2014 is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and 30% Merlot. It has a fragrant bouquet with blackberry, black plum, cigar ash and woodland scents, complex though not as intense as its white counterpart. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy, quite firm tannin that underpin a classic Domaine de Chevalier that has just the right amount of austerity at this stage.
