Warre's Vintage Port, 1945

Vintage Port

The 1945 Warre is a legendary port from an exceptional year. These bottles were acquired from a close relative of the Symington family where they were well-cellared from original purchase.

From the Wine Spectator…'This is like a deliciously fresh bowl of fruit. Medium red-ruby with a garnet rim, a nose of cranberries and cherries, full-bodied, with sweet cranberry flavors and a lovely balance of round tannins. A wonderful glass of Port.' (Jan. 1989)

Broadbent
Variable notes, including one framboise-scented, (in 1964), one woody. Showing marvellously well at the 1989 tasting of '45s in Florida: beautiful colour, lively, lovely gradation.

Very forthcoming indeed fairly forceful nose, brandy evident. A powerful wine with cockle-warming alcohol, crisp, lovely texture and elegance - for me the hallmark of Warre.

Kopke Port, 1944

Colheita Port, Single Harvest port

An outstanding 1944 Single Harvest Colheita port.

This 1944 Port from Kopke, the worlds oldest port house is a true rarity. There are no remaining stocks at Kopke and so these are some of the last bottles for sale.

This port has a bright amber colour with a brown-tawny halo. Elegant nose of dried fruits, well integrated with wood notes. Light and fragrant, with wonderful volume and structure. A wine with great freshness and multi-dimensional flavours. Delicate and persistent finish.

Colheita, or single harvest ports, are aged in the barrel. This is a contrast to vintage ports which are aged in the bottle and only have a short drinking window after opening.

Baron de Lustrac, 1943

Vintage Armagnac

All Baron de Lustrac Armagnacs are aged in 420ltr oak barrels and sold as single vintages. The grapes used are all harvested from the one particular year, and will only be distilled if the conditions were particularly good. Tokaji, 1943

Aszu Essencia (Half litre, 50cl)

This 1943 Tokaji Aszu Essencia is a sweet wine of stunning concentration and complexity. A rich complex wine with incredibly deep concentration, bitter oranges, ginger, manuka honey aromas and flavours, but though super sweet it is perfectly balanced with succulent citrus acidity. Harmony, balance and depth are absolutely world class.

After the Essencia, the Aszú Essencia (often confounded with the Essencia) is the second highest quality level among Tokaj wines. Its preparation is the same as that for the Aszú, and it is produced only in excellent years. The quality level is not indicated anymore by the number of puttonyos.

The Owners of Baron de Sigognac, The Guasch family, have been in Gascony since the 12th century. They have owned the château at Bordeneuve since 1974 and are one of the region's largest courtier and negociant operations.

Dow's Port, 1942

Vintage Port - capsule damaged and rewaxed - good label and level

A very rare wartime vintage.

Provenance:
No Dow vintages were formally declared during the war.
However it was common practice for shippers to bottle a small quantity of port to lay down. There was a shortage of part in the UK in the late 50's and the wine society brought up all of the bin ends of mature port - including some 1940's undeclared port. This bottle originates from the wine society purchase.

Heir of many centuries of savoir-faire and tradition: the Sigognac house is one of the oldest one of Armagnac.

The seconds had become years, the big hand moved only once a decade and the hour hand marked the centuries.
Baron de Sigognac had found the core of the mystery of Armagnac ageing : time and patience…
The legend adds that,
