Sauternes (Berry Bros & Rudd Label)
Sweet White Wine

Château LIOT extends its vineyard in the Haut Barsac, a privileged place for the production of great sweet wines.

The particularity of the Barsac terroir is the red clay soil which rests on a bed of broken limestone, favoring the penetration of the roots in the soil and ensuring the drainage.

The proximity of the Ciron river and the sunny afternoons are very favorable to the development of Botrytis Cinérea, which is essential for the elaboration of great sweet wines.After a traditional fermentation and vinification, the wine is aged in barrels for 9 to 12 months.

Barsac

A wonderful fruity dessert wine from the 1970 vintage that is still drinking well.

Château Liot is a 20-hectare property producing on average 5,500 cases per year. It is located in the south-west of the Barsac appellation and its vineyards border those of Château Climens. Liot's vineyards (Sémillon 85%, Sauvignon Blanc 10%, Muscadelle 5%) lie on a gravel/silt/alluvial topsoil and limestone subsoil.
The grapes are fermented in vats and the wine is then matured in oak barrels (15% new) for 15-18 months. Liot's wines are typically fresh and refined and display marvellous purity of fruit.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. The nose is lacking a little vigour and definition: rather muffled black fruit, minerals, dark cherries but it opens up and coalesces in the glass. Modern in style, quite opulent for the vintage…typical of Didier's style. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe dusty tannins, quite spicy on the entry, nice weight and cohesion, a little dry towards the finish but decent length. Very fine.

Tasted at the 1999 horizontal at Bordeaux Index. One of my favourite ‘99s, this has a very lifted, well-defined nose that eschews the more opulent bouquet that Didier sometimes conjures. Blackberry, cedar, raspberry leaf, pencil shavings. The palate is medium-bodied, not quite as ebullient as the bottle in Bordeaux last year, but it has great vivacity and purity towards the finish. St Julien 2me Growth Classification

A deep tawny rim with a mahogany core. This has a delightful nose, very good intensity with notes of cooked meats, roasted chestnut, toffee and a touch of marzipan. It smells as if it is from a hot vintage! After five minutes in the glass, it become a little muffled but develops a touch of mint. The palate certainly has more fruit concentration than the 1980, a rounded texture, quite sharp acidity with notes of sour cherry, a touch of leather and a dry, rather gamey, but attenuated finish. Léoville Las Cases is the most legendary wine of Saint-Julien: on a quality par with the Médoc's first growths, without the hefty price premium to match. The 1994 Latour a Pomerol is a wine to be aged., it can nevertheless be enjoyed fairly young. A magnificent wine that combines richness, concentration and elegance.

Comprising two plots with different distinctive locations and soil types, Latour à Pomerol is one of the best wines in the appellation in great vintages such as 1947, 1961 or 1970. The 1961 received Robert Parker's ultimate score of 100/100. Its finesse and rich substance is not unlike the best wines of Pomerol.

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1987 Latour was made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, without any Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot. The wine has a ruby color with some amber, and a promising bouquet of blackcurrants, spicy oak, and herbs. Medium-bodied, with more power and tannin than many wines of this vintage.
