Baron de Lustrac, 1983

Vintage Armagnac (Comes in original Lustrac Box as illustrated)

Baron de Lustrac is a small traditional éleveur specialising in fine old Armagnac vintages. Their extensive range is sourced from neighbouring estates in the Tenereze and Mas Armagnac regions and they keep an ageing and bottling chais near Magnan, in the Bas Armagnac region.

All Baron de Lustrac Armagnacs are aged in 420ltr oak barrels and sold as single vintages. The grapes used are all harvested from the one particular year, and will only be distilled if the conditions were particularly good. Perfect for big birthdays or as a special drink for the connoisseur as they truly are a fine example of the very best Armagnacs around.

Chateau Margaux, 1983

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 96 points Robert Parker ***
*** 96 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews
"As I have noted consistently, this can be a breathtaking wine, but having tasted it close to a dozen times since the last edition of this book, over half the bottles were marred by tainted corks. In fact, one would almost wonder if there was TCA problem in part of the wine storage area. The percentage of corked half-bottles is even higher than in the regular format. However, when clean this 1983, which has seemingly reached full maturity far faster than I would have guessed a mere four years ago, has a dense, murky plum/purple color and a gorgeous nose of smoked herbs,

Niepoort Port, 1983

Vintage Port

"Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match." (James Suckling, Vintage Port).

Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port.

Vintage Port must be bottled within two years of the harvest date and be 100 per cent wine from that harvest.

Taylor's Port, 1983

Late Bottled Vintage Port MAGNUM

Blended from wines of a single year, Late Bottled Vintage Port ages from four to six years in cask and is ready to drink when bottled. Its concentrated fruity flavour and firm, full-bodied style make Taylor's LBV the perfect port to accompany chocolate desserts, and blue cheeses such as Stilton or Roquefort. Powerful dark cherry and black fruit aromas. The floral and herbal notes that come through on the nose add lovely nuances to the bouquet. The palate shows great intense fruit flavours and fantastic depth and complexity.

1982 Madeira

D'Oliveiras Boal Madeira

Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter.

Medium orange amber color with 1 millimeter clear meniscus; appealing, light coffee, almond, reminiscent of Moroccan bastilla on the nose with a hint of passion fruit; tight, silky textured, tasty, balanced, rounded, tart orange, tart passion fruit palate with a vague sense of light salt; long finish.

Try this medium-sweet Madeira with stews, lamb and game dishes with sweet elements and spices such as cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and fennel.

1982 Taittinger

Vintage Champagne, Masson Label

Amongst Champagne's luxury cuveés and super-premium labels, Taittinger's wines live on one extreme end of the style spectrum. While many top Champagnes can be quite difficult to approach in their youth, with laser-like focus and delineation, even austerity, Taittinger instead tends to be immediately open and welcoming. These are beautiful, delicious Champagnes, with bubbles lazily winding their way up to the surface, inviting you to take another sip.

Morgan Port, 1982

Vintage Port

The Morgan 1982 Vintage Port is an unusual find as there are very few notes on this wine.

In 2016 AHB of the Port Forum wrote of this wine
"Dark honey brown in colour, slightly hazy in appearance. Very little on the nose with hints of apricot and tangerine, oxidised. Smooth and soft in texture with barley sugar on the palate, with a gentle bitterness. Good acidity giving a pleasant lime and grapefruit undertone to the sugaryness. The lime, grapefruit and some hyacinth grows on the palate. The aftertaste is peppery with a long lime zest finish that is bitter and intense. Very long. A much better port than expected based on the appearance.

Chateau Latour, 1981

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

"The 1981 tastes remarkably velvety and supple for such a young Latour--not that this is a malevolent occurrence--because the excellence, complexity, and richness of the wine are still present. The color is dark ruby, the bouquet offers plenty of ripe cassis and spicy oak, and the flavor is generous, silky, moderately tannic, and long in the finish. This Latour may turn out to be similar to the 1971." Parker, Bordeaux 3rd Ed.

Chateau Margaux, 1981

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe

The 1981 Chateau Margaux is probably the best wine from a difficult vintage.

95 points Wine Spectator
The other wine of the vintage. Seriously powerful with fabulous color and mint, cassis and berry aromas and flavors. Has a full body and is tannic; still needs time to come around. (10/1994)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
In weight and texture, the 1981 Margaux is closest in style to the 1979. It is an outstanding wine, even in the company of the monumental wines of 1982, 1983, and 1986, although it does not have the power and weight of these vintages. It is still very dark ruby/purple-colored.

Reviews
"A complete shock to everyone who tasted this blind at La Trouvaille. Tasted alongside Lynch Bages 66, a little fatter on the nose with notes of cedar and cooked meats. Good poise and freshness. The palate has good depth, smooth tannins and quite vivacious. Full of life and vigour. Where does the concentration come from? Who cares - a wine that stuck two fingers up at all its critics who have ever dismissed this wine. Lovely. Tasted February 2004." Neil Martin Wine Journal

Chateau Latour, 1980

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The wine of Latour is an example of regularity, no matter the quality of the vintage. Firm, tannic and concentrated in its youth, it requires a long aging to reveal all its potential, its power and extraordinary wealth. Perfectly ripe grapes produce a very impressive wine with an incredible bouquet of cassis, hazelnut and leather. A monumental wine.

Cockburn Port, 1980

Late bottled Vintage Port

Late Vintage Port is made entirely from grapes harvested in a specific year from a variety of vineyards, but is then left to age in barrel for four to six years before bottling, compared to around 18 months for Vintage. LBV does not have the grandeur, intensity and concentration of Vintage Port, but the finest examples boast mature, well-rounded, velvety fruit and a rich, smooth finish.

Dom Perignon, 1980

Champagne

Produced only in the finest vintages, Dom Perignon is Moet et Chandon's prestige cuvee Champagne. Usually a blend of half-and-half Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (give or take a few per cent here or there), it is rightly regarded as one of the very finest Champagnes, with the ability to age gracefully over many years. The wine is named after Pierre Perignon, the monk at the Abbey of Hautvillers who, legend has it, 'discovered Champagne' in the 17th Century and announced it was like "drinking stars".

Reviews: "Fresh and elegant, with characteristic doughy, yeasty flavors and a touch of honey and mocha.

Gould Campbell Vintage Port, 1980

Vintage Port
Labelled "Gould Campbell 1980 Vintage Port "RC"date taken from cellar 29/06/2016"

The provenance of this bottle is that it came from Symington Family Estates owners of the Gould Campbell brand. The rest is mystery - we do not know what RC refers to and the label is fairly plain or why this is marked taken from cellar.

Plums, raspberries, blackberries and spices on the nose, then a ripe palate filled with sweet fruit. Lots more fruit with notes of dark chocolate. Well-structured with lovely complexity.

Review:
Intense amber coloured. Presents a complex and rich bouquet of aromas where stands out the dried fruits. On the taste it is distinct, balanced and harmonious. Tannins elegantly combined which persists in the delicious finish.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1979

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, in neck, good label

From the famously tannic 1979 vintage, this Lafite is proving the more dismissive critics from earlier days wrong as it settles harmoniously into maturity with plenty of life and complexity remaining. At K&L, we are champions of great wines from lesser vintages, and here is a perfectly mature First Growth from a lesser vintage that may not be out of reach in price. Fans of classic wines from the Left Bank with preferences that favor the leathery and refined end of the spectrum will find much to appreciate here.

Chateau Margaux, 1979

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe
Level High Shoulder

*** 93 Points - Robert parker ***

Reviews: This wine is just now reaching full maturity, much later than I initially expected. It is a classy, elegant example of Margauxpossessing a dark ruby/purple color, and a moderately intense nose of sweet black currant fruit intermixed with minerals, vanillin, and floral scents. The wine is medium-bodied, with beautifully sweet fruit. This linear, more compressed style of Margaux possesses a good inner-core of sweet fruit, and a charming, harmonious personality. Although not a blockbuster, it is aging effortlessly, and appears to take on more character with each passing year.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1979

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Rating: 96 - Wine Spectator
Château Mouton Rothschild's 1979 label was designed by the Japanese abstract painter Hisao Domoto.

The wine has an attractively brilliant, red-orange color and a nose that opens slowly to reveal notes of cedarwoord, spice, pepper and black berry fruit with airing. Relatively refined on the palate, it shows good structure, delicate and not overly powerful, with supple, silky tannins. Spice, caramel, earth and leather complete the pleasant impression in the mouth, combining subtle flavors with an agreeable structure. The finish is typical of the vintage, not particularly long but quite expressive.

Amarone della Valpolicella, 1978

Rinaldi

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain well-balanced wines with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide. Notes: Color: strong ruby red. Clear and transparent. Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Flavor: wine with a velvety, raisiny character combined with the structure and typical stylish bitterness to give it good balance.
