Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1962

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe, level mid to upper shoulder, bin-soiled labels.

90 Points (Wine Journal)

"Although this has a more mature colour than the Margaux ’62, the nose is in a completely difference league with much better vigour and delineation: faded red-berried fruit, wild strawberry, cedar, a touch of leather and earth. The palate is very well balanced, slightly medicinal on the entry but showing much better fruit concentration than the Margaux, perfectly judged acidity and fine but firm tannins holding everything together. It has tautness on the linear finish that is so classic Lafite and in retrospect, this is the best bottle of Lafite ’62 to have passed my palate.

Chateau Latour, 1962

Pauillac 1st Growth Classification (top shoulder good labels)

A rare first growth wine. Chateau Latour only selects grapes from the 47 hectares which surround the Château Latour, the heart of the estate to make the "Grand Vin de Château Latour. The 1962 is medium-deep in colour with amber at the rim, with fragrant brambly, earthy aromas. Bright fruitiness characterised the palate, with intense, fresh aftertaste.

Chateau Yquem, 1962

Sauternes 1er Grand cru Classe, Label badly stained

91 Points Wine Journal.

" Moderate Clear lucid gold with green tints. The nose is very elegant and well defined, touches of wet wool, honey, wood resin and barley sugar (a la Barsac). I wish it had more vigour and complexity, for it is rather overwhelmed by the Coutet and the Suduiraut. The palate is far better than the nose with a lovely creamy, harmonious texture with perfect acidity and balance. Citrus peel, fresh ginger, dried apricot, ginger and orange sorbet with noticeable residual sugar on the finish. This is probably an underrated Yquem given market prices, but the modest nose means I must temper my appraisal.

Cossart Gordon Madeira, 1962

Bual Madeira
Half Bottle 37.5 cl Bottle

Cossart Gordon 1962 Bual Vintage Madeira is made from 100% Bual grapes and is a medium rich style of Madeira

Cossart Gordon’s Vintage Bual 1962 is a single harvest Madeira. This wine was aged for 53 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks were gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine was regularly racked and when it reached the desired stage of maturity it was bottled. Only 1,104 bottles of this wine were released.

1959 Anjou Moulin, 1959

J. Touchais

A beautiful sweet white wine from a producer renowned for producing wines lasting over a century. This wine is still maturing and is nearly at its peak. The wines of Moulin Touchais begin reaching their peak after twenty years, and many of the great vintages will take much longer. Vintages such as the 1953, 1959, 1964, 1969 are still maturing. The 1945, 1947 and 1949 have become classics.

Tasting Notes: Brilliant golden colour with pale gold hue. The nose is again restrained – a characteristic that appears with most of these wines. Aroma of honey, lemon and toffee apple. The palate is remarkably youthful; luscious with flavours of lemon, spice and honeycombe flavours followed by sugared pear.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1957

Pauillac Premiere Grand Cru Classe (Level upper shoulder)

Artist; Andre Masson.

This wine had a solid ruby core turning brown at the edges. Notes of iodine, bandaid, leather and barnyard. On the palate I got leather, brown sugar, tawny port notes with faint notes or red fruit. Dry with no detectable tannins. Medium plus finish.

Tokaji, 1956

Asju 5 Puttonyos (Half litre, 50cl) In original box

This 1956 Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos is a sweet wine of stunning concentration and complexity. A rich complex wine with incredibly deep concentration, bitter oranges, ginger, manuka honey aromas and flavours can be found, but though super sweet it is perfectly balanced with succulent citrus acidity. Harmony, balance and depth are absolutely world class.

After the Essencia, the Aszú Essencia (often confounded with the Essencia) is the second highest quality level among Tokaj wines. Its preparation is the same as that for the Aszú, and it is produced only in excellent years. The quality level is not indicated anymore by the number of puttonyos.

Chateau Latour, 1955

Pauillac Premiere Grand cru Classe.
Upper shoulder, bin soiled label.

94 points (Parker)
Reviews: "A spectacular Latour, from a vintage that has provided many superb surprises (especially in the Medoc and Graves), the deep garnet-colored 1955 reveals some amber at the edge. It remains tannic, but its extraordinary perfume of smoked meats, dried herbs, cedar, black fruits, underbrush, and leather is seductive. It is full-bodied, with a sweet, intense mid-palate, plenty of power, and decades of life remaining. This is an under-rated, stunning Latour that may even improve. Anticipated maturity: now-2020" Parker, Wine Advocate, 2000.

"Mahogany core with tawny rim.

Chateau Latour, 1952

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe -
Mid shoulder level, lightly bin-soiled label

"Tasted at the Ledbury 1950/1952 dinner. Although this vintage of Latour does not have a great reputation, I actually found a lot to admire here. It has an attractive bouquet, dusty black fruits at first but clearing with aeration to reveal a most floral aromatic profile: rose petals in an old antique vase, subtle wild mint notes and a touch of peppermint. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive delineation considering its age: notes of crushed strawberry, cedar, orange rind and tobacco. As with most wines from this vintage, it is austere on the finish, but this Latour has a femininity rarely found at this First Growth estate.

Fonseca Port, 1948

Vintage Port (high shoulder , unlabelled, embossed capsule)

1948 Fonseca Vintage Port – James Suckling had bestowed 100 points on this VP. Tawny-centered colour with a light yellowish edge, with surprisingly light colour overall, not what I am used to. In contrast to the massive masculine style of the Taylor, this showed the smooth elegance and feminine style of a great well-aged vintage Port. It exhibits cherry and sweet cranberry fruit, along with an incredibly complex and everlasting finish.

Graham's Port, 1942

Vintage Port (in neck good label)

Declared by some shippers, despite the war, and in some cases declared and bottled in 1945 to celebrate Victory. First Vintage to be bottled exclusively in Portugal, rather than shipped in cask as was customary.

Little known, and production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but well-cellared wines are still a pleasure.

Baron de Sigognac, 1941

Vintage Bas Armagnac
In original Wooden Gift Box

Heir of many centuries of savoir-faire and tradition: the Sigognac house is one of the oldest one of Armagnac.

In Armagnac, legend has it that, one day long ago,
Baron de Sigognac took all the traditional clocks
out of his cellars.
Fascinated by the mystery surrounding
the way Armagnac ages so well,
he had some very strange timepieces made.
On these clocks, the face had ten divisions instead of twelve.
The seconds had become years, the big hand moved only once a decade and the hour hand marked the centuries.
Baron de Sigognac had found the core of the mystery of Armagnac ageing : time and patience…
The legend adds that,
