Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1991

New

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

Score: 86 Points
Lafite's light-bodied 1991 possesses moderate ruby color, a solid inner core of fruit, as well as potentially excessive tannin for its size and constitution. The wine exhibits Lafite's subtle personality with a leafy, tobacco, lead-pencil nose intertwined with sweet aromas of cassis. Dry, austere, and lacking length, it should turn out to be a good representation of Latife-Rothschild in this so-so year.
Score: 86 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (91), February 1994

Chateau Latour, 1991

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

The Latour 1991 is a terrific wine for an off-vintage scoring 90 points by Wine Advocate.

Review: " Tasted blind from double magnum at the chateau, it is a long time since I have encountered this off-vintage Latour, which must rank as one of the finest of the vintage. The nose retains a touch of greenness that cannot be ignored; yet there are also attractive aromas of cigar box, graphite and sous-bois. The palate appears to have softened in the last few year and is not as brutish as I recall and there is a lovely spiciness towards the finish. I would not leave it for a long time, but it must rank as one of the finest in this forgettable year.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1991

Pauillac 1st Growth Classification

Robert Parker: 86
The 1991 exhibits a moderately dark ruby/purple color, as well as a promising and complex nose of such classic Pauillac aromas as lead pencil, roasted nuts, and ripe cassis. The initial richness is quickly obliterated by frightful levels of tannin, and a tough, hard finish. Although there is an interesting and alluring dimension to this wine, the tannin level is excessively high and the wine is likely to dry out after 10-15 years of cellaring. Readers who admire austere, fruitless wines will rate it higher.

Wine Spectator: 89
Incredibly fine and subtle for the vintage with tobacco, black currant and berry aromas and flavors, medium body and a long flavorful, silky finish.

Chateau Yquem, 1991

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
Half Bottle 37.5cl

Notes from Ch Yquem. A vintage marked by frost on the 21st of April that fortunately spared several plots of slope vineyards at Yquem. Summer was warm and dry, but September was rainy. The harvest was over in three passes which brought in only a small amount of grapes, but of very good quality. This experience shows what an advantage great terroirs have when spring frosts occur. In light of the weather that year, the calibre of 1991 Yquem exceeded our expectations, and benefited from a particularly fine summer.

Yquem's 1991 is a beautifully made, mediumgold-colored wine with a gorgeous nose of creme brulee, roasted coffee, and seet, honeyed pineapple and other assorted fruits.

Rossese, 1991

New

di Dolceacqua, Pietro Isnardi

Rossese is a mildly aromatic red grape variety thought to have been brought to its home in Liguria, northern Italy, along the Riviera from southern France. Used in a small number of DOCs to produce both blended and varietal wines. Even today Rossese remains something of an obscurity, planted only in a tiny fraction of the world's vineyards, and yet it still commands a great deal of respect from those who understand it.

Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port, 1991

Vintage Port

A striking, individualistic nose of spring flowers, blackberries, blueberries, and lead pencil shavings emerges from this saturated purple-coloured 1991. Evolved yet expansive, sweet, and generous, it admirably conceals moderately high tannins under a wealth of fruit and glycerin. The aromatic profile and attack merit a score in the mid-nineties, but the finish is short, thus lowering the overall rating

Warre's Vintage Port, 1991

Vintage Port

Heavy rain at the start of the year were able to support the vines through the dry spring and very hot summer. The grapes achieved perfect ripeness with high levels of sugar. This wine is very aromatic with black cherry, plum, dark chocolate and suede notes. A very silky texture with rich chocolate flavours, licorice, cloves, and lots of plum. The tannins are soft and integrated and there is a very long, delicious finish. Definitely a beauty!

The 30 year old Barros port is an absolute delight. It has a flavour of raisins, prunes, cherries a little cinnamon. As a port it is surprisingly light considering its age in that it doesn’t have a heaviness to it. The mouth feel is quite light, approachable and drinkable. Reviews "Medium lemon-straw colour. Intensely fragrant nose with aromas of jasmine, cinnamon buttered toast, stewed apples and preserved ginger. Concentrated honey-nut, warm apple tart and spice flavours fill the mouth giving ample flesh to the firm, fine structure. The bubbles are still remarkably frisky and, in harmony with the crisp backbone of acid, make for a relatively youthful, elegant and exquisitely balanced wine. Very long finish."
