1970 Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac:
The 1970 Mouton Rothschild had opened magnificently to reveal a classic bouquet of sweet cassis, tobacco, minerals, and exotic spice aromas. Opulent, full-bodied, thick, and juicy, the extraordinary evolution of this particular bottle would make a persuasive argument for long-term decanting. After being perplexed throughout much of this wine's evolution, I was reassured by this bottle. …

1970 Quevedo Single Harvest White Port, 1970
Sale
1970 Very Old White Single harvest Tawny Port
Presented in Gift Box as pictured
1970 Quevedo White Port. This is a true rarity as very little white port was made and only a small fraction was released. Tasted from cask at Quevedo's cellars from a family barrel, this is a beautiful port of outstanding quality. The colour is dark amber, nose of mature fruit, hazelnuts with a touch of caramel and nutmeg. On the palate there is a great balance of acidity and sweetness. This is a drier style of Port that I find really refreshing, especially when served slightly chilled. This port has a finish that is endless. 98/100 VWP Tasting from cask feb 2020.

Chateau Cantemerle, 1970
Haut-Medoc
The 1970 Cantemerle is mature and complex nose with leather, cigar box and just a little red berries. On the palate it is surprisingly fresh but rather lean. Not much fruit, as earthy notes have taken over. On the palate it has a relatively high acidity and smooth tannins. Enjoyed best accompanying food.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1970
Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
level in neck | good label
The 1970 Chateau Lafite Wonderful notes of smoke, mild truffle and focussed ripe plum; charred oak - all incredibly concentrated. As it developed on the palate the fruit subtly emerged to the fore, with remarkable race and no leanness and with all the non-fruit aromas converting to a magnificent backdrop in the mouth. Great length and perfect acidity.

Reviews
A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine. Neil Martin. …

Delaforce Vintage Port, 1970
VINTAGE PORT BBR Label
The nose has a slightly tawny, baked-earth edge to it, with aromas of spiced cedar wood, parma violets and sweet roasted meats. It is fresher than the wine's appearance would suggest. And the palate certainly has flesh at the beginning, and continuing through the middle, with a fair amount of structure still evident as well. In truth there are some attractive, perfumed elements to the flavour here, but also a lot of grip, and a slightly hot aspect to it as well. The finish is long, but a touch hot and fierce again. This is certainly a wine worth experiencing.

Offley Port, 1970
Vintage Port Grants of St James's label
A superb port from a classic vintage. The medium garnet colour has held up quite well with some bricking on the rim.The nose reveals violets, toffee, nuts, almond and candy whilst the palate is sweet. A mature port still in top form with a complex and balanced finish.

Royal Oporto, 1970
Vintage Port
From the outstanding 1970 vintage. The colour is more tawny than red, and fairly light. It gives the distinct impression of a very old, very mature vintage Port.
The nose gives a strong impression of honey and is followed by sweet grapes and soft red fruits. Very slightly spirity, but not so much that it interferes. This all changes after 5 hours as the honey and fruits nearly vanish and the nose became spirity.
Palate: Very soft and elegant with a very faint smokey note. There's more "sweet" to it than anything else, but it's not a pure sugary sweetness but rather the remains of a sweet fruit compote. …

Barolo, 1969
Denegri Lorenzo
Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years. …

Blandys Madeira, 1968
Sercial Madeira (75cl Bottle)
Blandy’s Vintage Sercial 1968 is a single harvest Madeira. This wine was aged for 38 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks were gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine was regularly racked and when it reached the desired stage of maturity it was bottled.
Only a limited number of bottles of this wine were released. Vintage (or Frasquiera) Madeira must be aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years, in practise they are aged for much longer, before being bottled under Madeira Wine Institute supervision. …
