Bual, Madeira

The 1920 Bual is one of Blandy’s most iconic Madeira wines. The nose is complex and intense, revealing dry fruits, exotic spices, vanilla, followed by some smoky notes, cedar oil and balsamic. Vintage Port

Very pale ruby that fades to a light pink at the edge. The nose is of plums and strawberries. Some nice carmalized flavours along with some very dark (almost overripe) plums, and almost no noticeable heat. The finish is not long, but not clipped either and there is a pleasant aftertaste of dates.

Vintage Port

The 1970 Butler Nephew Vintage is a top quality vintage port produced before the company was purchased by Gonzalas Byas and entered into decline. The wine is dark (60% opaque), light nose of candy and vanilla. Very sweet with a full body and serious backbone. A mixture of black cherries, raisins, dates and licorice on the palate overlaid with a little lavender. The backbone does balances some of the sweetness which leads to a long, long finish. Il 49 di Antonio Ferrari

The Il Barone ‘49 shows a deep garnet colour. For something so old it is still fresh with a touch of oxidation on notes of black cherries, chocolate and espresso infused with sweet spices. The wine has a long finish. This is a wine from the 1949 wine harvest. Fermentation was arrested before complete leaving a high residual sugar content which has preserved the wine. The wine then went into large old Slovenian casks for ten years and then stored in tanks where it has remained until bottling this year. Antonio Ferrari was a wine merchant and negociant in Piedmont who in the mid-20th century developed an interest in the grapes of Puglia. …
