Chateau Liot, 1971

Sauternes (Berry Bros & Rudd Label)
Sweet White Wine

Château LIOT extends its vineyard in the Haut Barsac, a privileged place for the production of great sweet wines.

The particularity of the Barsac terroir is the red clay soil which rests on a bed of broken limestone, favoring the penetration of the roots in the soil and ensuring the drainage.

The proximity of the Ciron river and the sunny afternoons are very favorable to the development of Botrytis Cinérea, which is essential for the elaboration of great sweet wines. After a traditional fermentation and vinification, the wine is aged in barrels for 9 to 12 months.

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
Very Top Shoulder
Part of label missing but vintage legible

Classifications often fail to reflect the current state of a chateau, and that's certainly the case for this Pauillac Fifth Growth. Chateau Lynch-Bages makes rich, powerful, full-bodied wines capable of long life.

Very cedary and "old style". Remarkable. It has lost all its hardness. Liquorice and cinnamon. Serena Sutcliffe, MW

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1961

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
Mid to upper shoulder level

ROBERT PARKER: 95
Still a spectacular wine, the 1961 defies mortality. It has been at its peak for nearly 15 years, yet it shows no signs of losing its fruit and drying out. The color is a dark garnet with orange/amber at the edge. The profound bouquet has the magnetic allure that leaves great Bordeaux unmatched for complexity. Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by an opulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, and suppleness. The wine holds in the glass without cracking up, and has a good 40-45 second finish.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1967

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

Tasting review on Cellar Tracker: The wine was terrific. It smelt of freshly polished boot leather, sage, spruce and briary fruits. In the mouth it was fresh with plenty of savoury nuance and good detail.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1969

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

Medium garnet-colored with considerable amber at the edge, the flavors were dry and angular, and there was considerable astringent tannin in the finish. Nevertheless, the bouquet was classic Pauillac and Lynch Bages - sweet and cedary, with plenty of herb-tinged black fruits, smoked meat, and game-like notes. It is a medium-bodied effort made in the old, elegant, slightly excessively tannic style of Bordeaux made during this period

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1970

Pauillac, 5th Growth Classification
92 Points Wine Spectator
Top shoulder / Bin soiled labels

*** 92 Points Wine Spectator ***
I drank a lot of this in Paris when I lived there in the mid-1980s. And I had a bottle this summer as well. Always outstanding. Shows intense aromas of prune and licorice. Full, velvety and long. This is a beautiful Bordeaux. (JS, Web Only-2007)

**** 91 Points Robert Parker ****
The 1970 is an old style Lynch Bages with plenty of dry tannin in the finish. Compellingly aromatic, it offers aromas of cedar wood, spice box, tobacco, earth, black currants, and new saddle leather. Spicy, concentrated, and burly, with mouth-searing tannin, this big, thick wine is a terrific example of Lynch Bages made in an older style.

Reviews
"This has a light nose, mulberry, a touch of wild mushroom, sloe and a touch of caramel. Moderate definition. Palate is medium-bodied, quite rustic tannins, mulberry, touch of leather, the acidity a little sharp and attacking. Course, peppery finish." Neil Martin Wine Journal tasted 2009.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1985

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

*** 92 Points - Parker ***

"The 1985 has been totally disarming, seductive, and sexy since birth. Its corpulence, medium to full-bodied personality, low acidity, attractive silkiness, and copious quantities of herb-tinged cassis fruit have always made this wine a winner. It is beginning to display a few signs that it is at its peak of maturity and will not get any better. In fact, it might be best consumed over the next 5-10 years. As it sat in the glass, the 1985 faded more than any other vintage, but its immense up-front pleasure cannot be denied. This is a wine to decant right before serving, and not to linger over.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1986

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe, Bordeaux
*** 94 Points - Parker ***

The history of Lynch-Bages, situated in the lands of “Batges” at the entrance to Pauillac, is emblematic of the Médoc region.
The Lynch-Bages vineyard (1855 Grand Cru Classé), overlooks the Gironde estuary and stretches over a beautiful gravelly hilltop. Formerly owned by the illustrious Lynch family, of Irish descent, the estate was acquired by the Cazes family in 1939.

Located on the left bank of the Gironde river, the Pauillac appellation enjoys exceptional climatic and geological conditions.
Combined with the natural barrier of the Landes forest, the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary play a fundamental role in regulating temperatures and contribute to creating a very specific micro-climate.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1994

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

The 1994 Chateau Lynch-Bages reveals a lovely perfumed nose of red fruit, cassis, cedar and graphite. On the palate, the fruit is round and ripe with a long balanced finish. A great wine in its own right and a pleasure to drink now.

If any château in all of the classified growths consistently outperforms its original status, it is Lynch Bages. Indeed, this château has long been prized by Pauillac lovers who seek good value, yet well made wine. The property is situated just outside the quiet village of Pauillac north of Latour and Pichon Lalande. It is run by the very capable and amiable Jean-Charles Cazes who took over from his father Jean-Michel Cazes in 2006.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1997

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe, Bordeaux

*** 88 Points - Neil Martin Wine Journal ***

Reviews:
"This has a superb nose, very lifted and well-defined, cedar, blackcurrant, smoke and a touch of burnt toast. Just soars from the glass. The palate is full-bodied, ripe tannins, beautiful balance and poise with a sense of controlled opulence towards the finish. It comes across very natural, black cherries, blueberry, a touch of orange zest. This is certainly an over-performing wine for the vintage and shows better than previous bottles, although it did fade a little when returning after 15 minutes in the glass. Drink now-2015. Tasted September 2009.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 2004

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe
*** 92 Points Robert Parker ***
Half Bottle 37.5cl

An outstanding 2004 vintage Bordeaux wine from Chateau Lynch-Bages.

Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. This has a noticeably clear, deep garnet colour. The nose is very clean and correct although it lacks a little complexity and flair: straightforward black fruits, cedar and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate shows a little hardness at first, but softens with aeration and soon adopts a more succulent texture with ripe black cherries, Doris plum and bilberry. Certainly this is a well balanced Pauillac packed full of ripe tannins with a crisp poised finish of black plum, cedar and cassis.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 2008

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe, Bordeaux

Reviews for the 2008 Chateau Lynch-Bages: "A sensational effort for the vintage, this textured, opulent, superb Lynch Bages is already strutting its stuff and should easily last for 20 years. Medium to full-bodied with an opaque dense purple colour, notes of flowers and cassis, a layered texture that builds incrementally in the mouth and tremendous purity and depth, it can be drunk now or cellared for two decades or more. Bravo!" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2011.

"Juxtaposed against the Pichon-Lalande, the Lynch Bages is far more reticent on the nose with more overt graphite and sous-bois aromas inflecting the fruit.

Chateau Margaux, 1945

Margaux 1er Grand Cru Classe
Half Bottle 37.5cl

1945 is a legendary year ! In symbolic fashion, a great vintage came along to celebrate the end of the Second World War… Château Margaux 1945 is a very powerful, concentrated, ripe wine, with a fine, complex bouquet, more elegant than the 1947 and 1949, which seem to have been more affected by the extreme heat of the summer. This wine possesses all the attributes of a great vintage of its generation. Having remained very young for so long, it now seems to us to be at its peak.

Chateau Margaux, 1947

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe
Vandermeulen bottled.
High Shoulder

Château Margaux 1947 is an outstandingly great wine, particularly powerful and still very fresh. The bouquet is intense and mellow, with very ripe fruit coming through. On the palate, the power of the tannins comes to the fore, leaving a slightly dry impression, which is quite typical of the wines of this generation. This type of wine was made for long ageing. It can be enjoyed now, of course, but it can be laid down without any problem for many more years.

Chateau Margaux, 1964

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe (very top shoulder)

Critic tasting note: "If this was not the wine of the day it came real close. The unnaturally red color has only some orange nuances on the edge. The bouquet is an explosion of balsamic sensations, holly, tanned leather and lots of spice. The pepper is abundant as are the sensations of blood in the background. The mouthfeel is still taut thanks to an epic yet not invasive acidity that is in perfect balance within a structure of unique elegance. The fine and thick tannins have by now settled but tactilely lift everything to a higher level. A wine dreams are made of." - 99/100, Doctorwine
