The 1970 Inferno di Valtellina has a bright crimson colour, with an aromatic bouquet of dried cherries, tar and rose water. As might be expected for a mountain-grown wine made from Nebbiolo, the body is relatively light, and laced with grippy tannins and high acidity. Valtellina wines are invariably lighter in body and power than their more famous and prestigious equivalents from Barolo and Barbaresco. With a few years of bottle age, game, leather-like notes will develop, and the crimson will turn to garnet with a brick-orange rim – the visual trademark of Nebbiolo-based wines.

Valtellina, an alpine valley in the far north of Lombardy, has been producing wine for over 2000 years. Today it is known for its bright, cherry-scented wines made from the Nebbiolo grape variety, known here as Chiavennasca (after the nearby town of Chiavenna). These come in two forms: the standard Rosso di Valtellina and its powerful, dried-grape Sfursat (Sforzato) form.
