The 1964 wine vintage was a five star vintage for north Italy producing some very fine wines that are still drinking today. The vintage was very good for Port, although not declared) and also for Bordeaux. Any of these wines would make a fabulous gift for a 60th Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Barolo Mirafiore, Italy, Red Wine
  • 1964 Palo Cortado, Montilla Moriles, Spain
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1964.

  •
This Year in History: BBC Two begins scheduled broadcasting; its first programme is Play School.
Eurovision Winner: Italy with the song "Non Ho Leta" by Gigliola Cinquetti
Born in this Year: Jeff Bezos, Entrepreneur, Billionaire and founder of Amazon.com. In 2013, he purchased The Washington Post. He is considered to be an e-commerce pioneer and consumerism revolutionary. His company Bezos Expeditions is a partial funder of businesses such as Airbnb, Twitter, and Uber.
    Top Grossing Movie: Goldfinger

Bordeaux: In Bordeaux, the red wines from the 1964 vintage were generally characterized by a lighter and more elegant style. They may not have the power, richness, or aging potential of some of the top vintages, but they can still offer pleasant drinking experiences. The harvest and weather favoured those producers on the right bank who harvested early (Graves, St Emilion and Pomerol).

Italian: An outstanding 5-star vintage in Piedmont and Tuscany that produced wines of immense grandeur. The depth of the bouquet and the fullness of flavour came together with rounded tannins to produce immense wines of character and dimension. Growers could leave the grapes on the vine to become ripe, and harvest went on until mid-November to give a large crop.

Portugal: A bottle of port from 1964 makes the perfect 60 year old wine gift in 2024, whether for a birthday or anniversary. Our wine buyer recommends the single harvest colheita ports such as the as these are drinking very well. They also come with the added advantage that they can be savoured for months after opening. The 1964 port vintage was a challenging year due to fluctuating weather conditions; a small amount of single quinta port was made but it is very rare. However, some truly excellent single harvest Colheitas were produced. The weather at the start of the year was unsettled, with rain and thunderstorms at the end of July followed by a hot, dry August which developed the vines. The hot weather continued throughout the season and into the harvest, when it began to fluctuate. The grapes harvested were more raisin than the winemakers would like and this is reflected in the small amounts of port produced.

Spain: 1964 has been known as the 'vintage of the century' for Rioja. Tastings of various wines from different estates and classifications reveal the same incredible sweet fruit, vibrancy and youthfulness. An excellent vintage for Spain.

    Barolo, 1964

    Marchesi di Barolo

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

    Caluso Passito, 1964

    Corrado Gnavi
    ** BIG BOTTLE OF 3,75 LITERS **

A Passito made from grapes of Erbaluce native to the Piemonte region in Northern Italy. The grapes are harvested at the end of September and laid in small wooden cases where clusters are close to each another. At the beginning of March, after a drying period of about five months, grapes undergo a careful selection and a slow pressing process. The resulting must is fermented in barriques. Aging lasts four years, at least two of which in barriques. Tasting Notes: Intense amber in colour. The nose shows the typical and natural aromas of dried Erbaluce. Intense notes of ripe, jammy and dried apricot fruit, followed by honey and sweet flowers, with pastries and persistent aromas of toasted almonds and hazelnuts.

    Castel Chiuro, 1964

    Nino Negri

Established in 1897, Nino Negri is the premier estate producing wine in the Valtellina DOCG in Italy’s Lombardy region. The estate specialty is Sfursat (“strained” or “forced”); a wine made from grapes harvested by trained pickers and dried for 100 days in the cool, dry, alpine air. This winemaking style combines the opulence of Amarone with the elegant complexity of Barolo. The star and primary varietal here is Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo. The variety has been cultivated in the area for over 1,000 years and all Valtellina DOCG wines must contain at least 90% Chiavennasca. he winery is located in the city of Chiuro in the 15th Century Quadrio Castle.

    Chateau Calon Segur, 1964

    3ème Cru Classé Saint Estèphe

The 1964 Calon Segur has a mature mahogany hue with tawny rim, the nose is fully mature with aromas of Chinese 5-spice, molasses, mint and cedar, lacking the clarity of a great ’61. The palate is medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and fine, sturdy tannins, still earthy but dominated by decayed, mushroom fruit and sous-bois on the finish. Still utterly enjoyable, but beginning to show its age. Drink now.

    Chateau Gruaud Larose, 1964

    St Julien 2nd Growth Classification,

Cellar Tracker review. Upon holding the bottle up to the light, the clarity was stunning. Beautiful ripe nose, well balanced fruit oak and acidity with a finish that lingered for 30-40 seconds. A truly great bottle with enough structure to age another 5-10 years. Cellar Tracker posting, Tasted 2006.

    Chateau Haut Brion, 1964

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe
Excellent level | Very damaged label, Vintage Identified from cork - cut capsule

    notes on 1964 Haut Brion
"... deep garnet core with a tawny rim. A light nose, touches of smoked wood, cedar, pain grille and soot. Nice definition but the fruit is all but dispensed with. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity, nice tautness here, good depth but not complex. Fine tannins, dusty black fruit with hints of black olive towards the tobacco-tinged finish, that seems just a little sugary (chaptalized?) Certainly not a bad wine for the vintage more renowned on the Right Bank and it has held up well. Graceful and undemanding. Drink now. Tasted June 2009.

    ** 97 Points Wine Journal **
    ** 91 Points Robert Parker **

    Reviews:
"This is an utterly delicious wine! A languid, almost sedate bouquet whose charms creep up on you, with macerated black cherries, clear honey, blackcurrant wine gums, glycerol and a touch of rose petal, strafed with breathtaking delineation, the palate is full-bodied, exuding a sense of controlled opulence. Cashmere tannins, quite glossy and plush with immense purity and class. Rounded towards the finish with sweet black cherries mixed with summer fruits, great tension and poise. I doubt I will ever encounter a finer example of this wine.

    Chateau Margaux, 1964

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe (very top shoulder)

Critic tasting note: "If this was not the wine of the day it came real close. The unnaturally red color has only some orange nuances on the edge. The bouquet is an explosion of balsamic sensations, holly, tanned leather and lots of spice. The pepper is abundant as are the sensations of blood in the background. The mouthfeel is still taut thanks to an epic yet not invasive acidity that is in perfect balance within a structure of unique elegance. The fine and thick tannins have by now settled but tactilely lift everything to a higher level. A wine dreams are made of." - 99/100, Doctorwine
