The 1974 vintage was good for Italian Wines and Colheita Ports but challenging for Bordeaux which suffered from cool and wet weather leading to low yields and difficulties with ripening.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Palmer Port 1974
  • Quinta da Devesa 50 year old White Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1974
  • Bodegas Toro Albala 1974 Don Px

This Year in History: New Year's Day is celebrated as a public holiday for the first time and Sweden wins Eurovision with the Abba song "Waterloo". Olivia Colman, Actress, British actress was born in this year. She who won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Queen Anne in the 2018 film The Favourite and was cast as Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix series The Crown.
    Top Grossing Movie: Towering Inferno

Bordeaux: A massive crop was produced, but the 1974 wines from Bordeaux were hard and tannic and lacked the ripeness of the 1975 vintage. The wines have declined gracefully over the decades and only the top houses will be drinkable nowadays.

Italian: A 1974 wine from Italy will make a perfect 50 year old wine gift. Celebrated as a great vintage in Italy at the time, the 1974 vintage is now still considered to be very good. The 1974 vintage produced a large crop, close to the 1964 but with less quality. Summer was hot and dry and a mild autumn allowed the grapes to ripen fully. The wines produced are characterised as being fairly firm and tannic with low acidity but good, rich fruit. The harvest time was very long and lasted through November. Wines produced in this year have reached full maturity but continue to hold.

Portugal: The 1974 port vintage produced some excellent single harvest colheita, making a port from this year the ideal 50 year old wine gift for a 50th birthday or anniversary. For vintage ports it was a moderate year that was not declared by the major port houses; despite a huge crop, very few vintage port wines were bottled from this year and the bottles that were produced are very rare.

    Sogno di Bacco, 1974

    Umberto Fiore

Sogno di Bacco is made from thelong lasting nebbiolo grape. Nebbiolo is a black-skinned red wine grape variety most famous for creating the 'tar and roses' scent of Barolo wines from Piedmont, north-western Italy. The grape's very name is evocative of its home among the misty foothills of the western Alps; the nebbia (Italian for 'fog') after which it is named frequently arrives on early October mornings, when the Nebbiolo harvest is in full swing.

The extremely favourable climatic conditions combined with very steep vineyards result in a dark ruby wine, finely scented, soft and velvety on the palate.

    Taylor's Port, 1974

Crusted Port - Bottled in 1974

Crusted Port is a very small category, named because of the 'crust' of sediment that it forms in the bottle.
Invented by the British-owned Port houses predominantly for the British Port drinker, it is intended to be a more economical alternative to Vintage or Late Bottled Vintage.

Crusted is a blend of several harvests, which are bottled without being filtered and laid down to mature like Vintage wines. Using this approach allows the manufacturer to use some of the lesser harvests but still produce a good rich full bodied wine at an economical price.

Usually a year is stated on the label which, because the wine was made from a blend of harvests, is the year in which the wine was bottled.

    Liston
    *** BIG GALLON OF 3,78 LITERS ***

The Valpolicella zone is bordered to the west by the Bardolino DOC, located along the banks of Lake Garda, which produces similar wines to basic Valpolicella using many of the same grapes. In 1968, the boundaries of the region were extended far eastward towards the DOC production zone of Soave and south to the plains of the northern bank of the Po river and its tributary the Adige.

    Review:
With a light amber colour, reveals a nose full of elegance and character, where the dried fruits are blended with the light sensations of chocolate and coffee. In the mouth it’s an attractive, velvety and involving wine. Presents an excellent acidity, good structure and an amazing finesse.

    Sandeman

    50 Year Old Tawny Port
    ***95 Points- GOLD- Decanter 2023*** Special Offer | Was £289 | Now £270

Beautiful pale tawny in colour. The 50-Year-Old Tawny is exceptionally pronounced and complex in aroma profile. Intense aromas of dried fruits, roasted walnuts, toffee and spice burst out of the glass. Velvety smooth on the palate, with a bright acidity keeping the decadent flavours on the straight and narrow and all culminating in a deliciously lingering finish.

There are few more iconic images in the world of wine than the ‘Don’, the logo created for the Sandeman family in 1928 by George Massiot Brown. The cape was modelled on the attire worn by university students in Porto, while the wide-brimmed hat was a nod to the family’s presence in Jerez.

    Barolo, 1974

    Succ. A. Camerano

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

    Dolcetto, 1974

    Luigi Einaudi

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

    Merlot, 1974

    Gianfranco d'Arttimis

Merlot can also produce a delightful and intriguing pure varietal wine. While Merlot has a long history of use as a blending wine, pure Merlot wines have been relatively slow in gaining momentum in Italy. That too has changed and today some of the world’s best Merlot wines bear Italian labels.
