Travesagna, 1964

Conti Ermanno

The 1964 Conti Ermano Traversana is a firm-bodied and well-structured red, displaying a garnet-red color, aromas of violets and sweet spices, and notes of pomegranates on the finish. The high levels of acidity are deemed its secret ingredient, contributing to the ageing potential of the wine and its easy-drinking nature, making it one of Italy's longest-lived reds.

Tokaji, 2017

Dobogó, Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 50cl

Dobogó is a small, family-run winery which operates on five hectares of first-growth vineyards in the volcanic heartland of Tokaj, near the village of Mád. Dobogó is co-owned by Izabella Zwack and winemaker Attila Domokos, who share the same vision of presenting to Hungary and the world their fresh, vibrant, exciting expression of Tokaji wines – both in the ‘aszú’ style and the drier styles – while remaining faithful to Tokaj’s historic tradition of excellence.

The vineyards, planted with Furmint, Hárslevelű and Muscat Lunel atop soils of volcanic origin, are farmed using biodynamic principles.

Tokaji, 1993

Tokaji Royal Aszu Essencia
(Half litre, 50cl), Hungary

Situated along the southern slopes of the Zemplén Mountains, Tokaj is characterized by late springs and short growing seasons. The average temperatures are generally cool, with long, sunny summers and dry autumns. Tokaj’s soil is largely clay or loess with a volcanic substratum; vines are approximately 20 years old. The meeting of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers in Tokaj creates a mist similar to that of the fog in Sauternes. The mist encourages “botrytis cinerea,” or “noble rot,” which dries and shrivels the Furmint, Hárslevelü and Muscat grape varieties that comprise Tokaji wines, and concentrates the sugars.

Tokaji, 1993

Tokaji Aszu 4 Puttynos 1993
bin soiled and damaged Berry brothers labels

Hungary’s most famous dessert wine is Tokaji the legendary sweet elixir. It can only be spoken in the superlative about this wine, as it is a medicine, a real nectar. The name Tokaji (which is of Protected Designation of Origin) is used for labeling wines from this wine district. The location of the region has a unique climate, beneficial to this particular viniculture, due to the protection of the nearby mountains, long warm autumns and mists that come in from the River Bodrog, creating perfect conditions for noble rot. Creating the botrytised ('aszú') grapes for which the region is famous. A wonderful sweet wine from this renowned producer.

Tokaji, 1915

Aszu Essencia (Half litre, 50cl), Hungary

This 1915 Tokaji Aszu Essencia is a sweet wine of stunning concentration and complexity. A rich complex wine with incredibly deep concentration, bitter oranges, ginger, manuka honey aromas and flavours can be found, but though super sweet it is perfectly balanced with succulent citrus acidity. Harmony, balance and depth are absolutely world class.

After the Essencia, the Aszú Essencia (often confounded with the Essencia) is the second highest quality level among Tokaj wines. Its preparation is the same as that for the Aszú, and it is produced only in excellent years. The quality level is not indicated anymore by the number of puttonyos.
