Spanna, 1973

Antoniolo Santachiara

Spanna has often been cited by wine experts as one of Italy’s greatest ageing wines. Spanna’s longevity can be attributed, at least in part, to the addition of smaller amounts of less tannic, more acidic grape varieties. Tasting notes: The nose opens up beautifully after about an hour and the wine has gorgeous ripe and sweet fruit, nice acidity, and perfectly softened tannins.

In 1968, the boundaries of the region were extended far eastward towards the DOC production zone of Soave and south to the plains of the northern bank of the Po river and its tributary the Adige.

Vecchio Maniero, 1973

Marchesi di Barolo

This wine from the good 1973 vintage is made with the long lived Nebbiolo grape. this is a black-skinned red wine grape variety most famous for creating the 'tar and roses' scent of Barolo wines from Piedmont, north-western Italy. Amarone della Valpolicella, 1972

Farina F.lli

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Different sources and different grape varieties are important to obtain well-balanced wines with the fine structure that only a few single areas in the Valpolicella zone can provide. Notes: Color: strong ruby red. Clear and transparent. Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Chateau La Tour Carnet, 1972

Haut Medoc, 4th Growth Classification

A classified growth that remains somewhat under-the-radar. Château La Tour Carnet, a 4emé Cru Classé property, has a long and illustrious history and its wines enjoyed a considerable upsurge in reputation since the mid-1970's when it was bought by Louis Lipschitz. He replanted much of the vineyards and made many long overdue changes to the vinification process.

La Tour Carnet has 42 hectares of vineyards in St-Laurent in the Haut-Médoc. The wine is typically a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. La Tour Carnet produces dry, medium-bodied, classically made clarets that show at their best with 5 years of bottle ageing.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1972

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe (top shoulder - labels bin soiled)

Wassily Kandinsky label

Reviews: Stands up well for a 72. This had a deep red-brown color that was consistent throughout. It showed an intense nose of fresh asparagus which carried into the palate where it was joined by notes of celery. This exceeded expectations and was surprising drinkable for the amount of greenness it had. The half-bottle leftover the next day lost a lot of the asparagus/celery notes, having them replaced by some bell pepper and hints of cabernet fruit (cassis). One for the collectors.
