"What an intense wine. Fabulous bouquet of rich, sumptuous caramel. There’s some sweetness here, but rapierlike acidity is underneath.” Wine Spectator

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1903

Boal, Madeira

D’Oliveiras is one of the more classic Madeira shippers, and one of the few to survive from the pre-Phylloxera era. The Bastardo grape barely survived Phylloxera and basically disappeared from Maderia. Its excellent acidity supports this wine. Perfumed black walnut and green figs present on a seductive, drying palate. Bottled in 2006. "Matured in Adegas do Torreao and bottled in 2006, the Bastardo '27 has a refined, quite reticent bouquet with notes of dried honey, creme brulee and scorched earth... The palate is very elegant and harmonious, the breeding of this almost extinct grape variety really showing through.

Malvasia Madeira

*** 91 Points Wine Advocate ***

"The 1895 Malvasia has an attractive bouquet with notes of orange peel, nougat, marmalade and walnut with noticeable volatility that detracts from its precision. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely spicy entry with notes of nutmeg, cinnamon, white pepper and shaved ginger. It shows good substance and length, though I detect just a little dryness creeping in on the over-powering finish." The Wine Advocate

Verdelho Madeira

*** 96 Points Robert Parker ***

"The 1890 Verdelho has an elegant, refined bouquet that is pure and seductive. It offers precise aromas of orange peel, tangerine, dried honey and wax resin with great delineation. The palate is very well-balanced with impressive clarity and poise. It builds nicely in the mouth with tangy, oxidative notes that are perfectly in tune with the sweetness. This illustrates just how well Verdelho ages over decades. This is a stunning 122-year-old Madeira." The Wine Advocate

"The 1850 Verdelho remains an exquisite Madeira that is one of the finest ever produced in this, the founding year of the winery. It has a well-defined bouquet with seductive notes of fresh marmalade, quince, dried mango and melted candle wax. The palate is crisp and well-defined with superb acidity that is perfectly in tune with the spice-laden vestiges of decayed fruit. It is fresh and taut, performing impressively for its 162-years of age." The Wine Advocatey).

Dolcetto d'Alba, 2001

Sandrone Luciano

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.
