Chateau Grand Pontet, 1996

St Emilion

90-91 points outstanding - Robert Parker

"This up and coming St.-Emilion is somewhat under-rated given the consistently high quality of recent vintages. The 1996 is a flamboyant, dark ruby/purple-colored wine with a soaring bouquet of plum liqueur, toasty new oak, black cherries, smoke, and dried herbs. In the mouth, evidence of sur-maturite jamminess and richness emerge from this medium-bodied, rich, spicy, impressively-endowed wine. There is tannin in the medium to full-bodied finish." - RP

Chateau Labegorce-Zede, 1996

Margaux

The 1996 Château Labégorce-Zédé displays a clear medium intensity ruby red colour slowly turning into garnet. It reveals a maturing nose of tobacco, dark fruit and an herbal note. The palate is spicy with vanilla tones, high tannin, medium acidity and medium length. A nice claret.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1996

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

*** 93/100 - Robert Parker ***
The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years. Score: 93 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (196), August 2011

Chateau Marbuzet, 1996

Saint Estephe

The 1996 Chateau Marbuzet has a dark ruby colour. Iron, game and deep red fruits fill the nose with exciting aromas. Plump, seductive flavors cover the palate with a hit of '96 acidity on the finish keeping everything balanced and in proper order. A bit of lavender makes its way into things after being exposed to air for 60 minutes.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1996

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

94 Points - Parker
95 Points - Wine Journal

Reviews
"This estate's staff believes that the 1996 Mouton-Rothschild is very complex. I agree that among the first-growths, this wine is showing surprising forwardness and complexity in its aromatics. It possesses an exuberant, flamboyant bouquet of roasted coffee, cassis, smoky oak, and soy sauce. The impressive 1996 Mouton-Rothschild offers impressive aromas of black currants, framboise, coffee, and new saddle leather. This full-bodied, ripe, rich, concentrated, superbly balanced wine is paradoxical in the sense that the aromatics suggest a far more evolved wine than the flavors reveal.

Chateau Pavie Decesse, 1996

St Emilion Grand Cru Classe

This estate has been rejuvenated thanks to the inspired leadership of Gerard Perse and it has never produced better wines. The 1996 has quantities of redcurrant fruit in the nose, along with earth and spice. This is a pleasant wine that is in its prime now and so will gain no benefit from additional cellaring.

Chateau Sociando Mallet, 1996

Medoc

87 Points - Wine Journal.

Neil Martin writes of this wine... "Showing fabulously at the turn of the millennium where it displayed great depth and concentration. A more muted response when last tasted blind at Farr's horizontal. Much fresher on the nose with good fruit concentration. Blackberry, cedar, burnt toast, quite complex and well-defined. The palate is quite sweet with bitter cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Moderate tannins with a fleshy finish. Not bad at all. Tasted September 2006." Neil Martin Wine Journal

D'Oliveiras Madeira, 1996

Malvasia

***Gold Medal-Concours Mondial Bruxelles***
*** 17/20 Jancis Robinson ***

"Ochre/walnut-skin colour. Complex mix of sweetness and bitter mocha. Very sweet and still so fresh. Like liquidised raisins and orange peel in dark caramel." Jancis Robinson

Madeira is made on the volcanic island of the same name situated in the Atlantic ocean some 400 miles off the North Africa coast. The sub-tropical island was discovered in 1419 by Portuguese word for wood or timber. In 1807, John Blandy was posted to the island as part of the British Army garrison sent to Madeira to thwart any invasion attempt by Napoleons forces.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1996

Vintage Port

This wine is a mysterious phenomenon, a magical wine produced in extremely limited quantities and only in a few years each decade. It is the expression of a terroir and confirms something that is for me a deeply held belief. The Nacional is great because of the grapes and where they come from, not because of anything particular that we do. It has a unique personality, an extraordinary intensity and, even after many years of ageing, retains an astonishing youthfulness.

Barbaresco, 1995

Serio Batista Borgogno

Barbaresco is one of the great wines of Italy's north-western Piedmont region. This aristocratic red has its vineyards situated in the Langhe, on the right-hand side of the Tanaro river and extending from the area north-east of Alba to the communes of Barbaresco, Nieve and Treiso. The dominant variety grown is Nebbiolo, but Dolcetto and Barbera also play a part. The vines are generally grown on limestone-rich marl soils. similar to the Tortonium soils of the Barolo and La Morra areas in Barolo. Similar to its more famous sibling Barolo, Barbaresco is made from 100% Nebbiolo and shares its cult status as one of the finest wines in the world.

Bollinger, 1995

Champagne RD

RD is kept 'on the lees' in Bollinger's cellars, and only released once the wine has reached a particular degree of development. Weighty and rich, with aromas of white truffle and layers of concentrated flavour, RD represents the pinnacle of Bollinger's expertise.

RD, which stands for récemment dégorgé (recently disgorged), is exclusively made with grapes from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards. The varietal balance is usually 70% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay: no Pinot Meunier is used. The wine is exclusively based on the first press fraction, known as the cuvée.

The area’s most highly regarded wines come from the Chianti Classico zone which is the heartland of the Chianti wine region – its traditional and longest-established vinicultural area. This fame is due not just to the high quality of the wines, but also to the classico zone's iconic Tuscan landscape and wine making traditions. This Chianti is characterised by its red and black cherry character, intermingled with notes of wild herbs, mint and spice, supported by a racy acidity and mellow tannins.
