Chateau Haut Brion, 1964

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe
Excellent level | Very damaged label, Vintage Identified from cork - cut capsule

notes on 1964 Haut Brion
"... deep garnet core with a tawny rim. A light nose, touches of smoked wood, cedar, pain grille and soot. Nice definition but the fruit is all but dispensed with. The palate is medium-bodied with sharp acidity, nice tautness here, good depth but not complex. Fine tannins, dusty black fruit with hints of black olive towards the tobacco-tinged finish, that seems just a little sugary (chaptalized?) Certainly not a bad wine for the vintage more renowned on the Right Bank and it has held up well. Graceful and undemanding. Drink now. Tasted June 2009.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1970

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe
Damaged labels

*** 90-92 points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "Brown rim. Brown sugar, olives and leather nose. Quite rich for 1970. Balanced and very smooth palate. Coffee & sweet red fruits. Fully mature, a highly enjoyable wine (and far cheaper than Latour.) Somewhat under-rated by others. Then again chez Alex Hunt in November 2005. Although a little musty at first, this wine grows and grows on you. A cool, blackberry leaf, cranberry nose with lots of cedar and pine is followed by a tannic, almost rustic, broad-shouldered palate with cedary, tobacco-infused fruit. Very classic in style but suited the venison perfectly.

(High Shoulder - Small nick to the label)

The 1971 Haut Brion is one of the stand-out wines from the mediocre 1971 vintage - This well-stored bottle should be no exception. Reviewers have consistently noted that the wine is still in the plateau of its maturity having structure and complexity with a good core of fruit.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1942

Mature mahogany colour, a little cloudy. Plenty of glycerine, unctuous and creamy port like texture, but without the sweetness, which one could expect given that 1948 wasn’t a very ripe vintage. It kept getting better in the glass.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 2003

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classé, Bordeaux
100 Points
Excellent provenance

The 2003 Lafite Rothschild comes as close to perfection as any of the great Lafites made over the past three decades (1982, 1986, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010). This sensational effort came in at 12.7% natural alcohol, it is made in the style of one of this estates great classics, the 1959. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color to the rim along with a luxurious bouquet of cedarwood, lead pencil shaving, white chocolate, cocoa and cassis. Fat, rich, opulent and full-bodied with low acidity and stunning seductiveness and complexity, this noble wine possesses a bountiful, generous, heady style.

Chateau La Lagune, 1970

Medoc Grand Cru Classe

THE 1970 La Lagune is from exceptional provenance having been professionally stored since original purchase.
Quite a deep garnet core. A surprisingly sweet, fragrant almost floral nose with notes of backed cherries and tar. The palate has sharp acidity, very fresh, well-knit with simple black fruits. Not a complex wine, but a testament to how well balanced, rather than powerful wines can age. Raisins on the finish. Impressive for a 1970. Neil Martin, Wine Journal

Chateau La Lagune, 2008

Haut Medoc, 3rd Growth Classification, Bordeaux

Over the next quarter of a century, it will be interesting to see how this 2008 matches up with La Lagune’s prodigious 2005, the finest wine they have ever made. The opaque ruby/purple-tinged 2008 may be the second greatest wine yet produced here. Displaying sweet kirsch, black currant, cedar, smoke, and graphite aromas as well as an impressive thickness and glycerol richness, and a pure, nuanced character (because of the grapes’ long hang-time and the small yields), this remarkable effort is long, textured, and impeccably well-balanced. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 20-25.
