The 1964 wine vintage was a five star vintage for north Italy producing some very fine wines that are still drinking today. The vintage was very good for Port, although not declared) and also for Bordeaux. Any of these wines would make a fabulous gift for a 60th Anniversary or birthday.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Barolo Mirafiore, Italy, Red Wine
  • 1964 Palo Cortado, Montilla Moriles, Spain
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac 1964.

Bordeaux: In Bordeaux, the red wines from the 1964 vintage were generally characterized by a lighter and more elegant style. They may not have the power, richness, or aging potential of some of the top vintages, but they can still offer pleasant drinking experiences. The harvest and weather favoured those producers on the right bank who harvested early (Graves, St Emilion and Pomerol).

Italian: An outstanding 5-star vintage in Piedmont and Tuscany that produced wines of immense grandeur. The depth of the bouquet and the fullness of flavour came together with rounded tannins to produce immense wines of character and dimension. Growers could leave the grapes on the vine to become ripe, and harvest went on until mid-November to give a large crop.

Portugal: A bottle of port from 1964 makes the perfect 60 year old wine gift in 2024, whether for a birthday or anniversary. Our wine buyer recommends the single harvest colheita ports such as the as these are drinking very well. They also come with the added advantage that they can be savoured for months after opening. The 1964 port vintage was a challenging year due to fluctuating weather conditions; a small amount of single quinta port was made but it is very rare. However, some truly excellent single harvest Colheitas were produced. The weather at the start of the year was unsettled, with rain and thunderstorms at the end of July followed by a hot, dry August which developed the vines. The hot weather continued throughout the season and into the harvest, when it began to fluctuate. The grapes harvested were more raisin than the winemakers would like and this is reflected in the small amounts of port produced.

Spain: 1964 has been known as the 'vintage of the century' for Rioja. Tastings of various wines from different estates and classifications reveal the same incredible sweet fruit, vibrancy and youthfulness. An excellent vintage for Spain.

    Travesagna, 1964

    Conti Ermanno

The 1964 Conti Ermano Traversana is a firm-bodied and well-structured red, displaying a garnet-red color, aromas of violets and sweet spices, and notes of pomegranates on the finish. The high levels of acidity are deemed its secret ingredient, contributing to the ageing potential of the wine and its easy-drinking nature, making it one of Italy's longest-lived reds.

    Vietti Barolo, 1964

    Vietti

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Vietti is an Italian winery located in the Piemonte region, specifically in the commune of Castiglione Falletto. It's widely regarded as one of the top producers of Barolo, a prestigious red wine made from the Nebbiolo grape variety.

    Reviews:
"Highly perfumed amaretto, truffle, rose, toasted sesame, saddle leather, damp earth. Quite prominent acidity on the medium bodied palate, Morello cherries, confection, Christmas cake and baking spice. Quite graceful poise, with still some tannic reserve. Got better as the hours rolled on. Delightfully youthful, freshening with air." Cellar Tracker Review (2017)

    Barolo, 1964

    Terre del Barolo - Riserva

Barolo lies just south-west of Alba in Italy's north-western Piedmont region. It is considered one of the finest and longest-lived wines, often referred to as 'the king of wines and the wine of kings'. Wine production is strictly limited to the vineyards located on steep hills around the towns of Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba and Monforte d'Alba, Despite the different characteristics of these wines due to the varied terroir, they do display similar traits. These include a garnet color, powerful structure, firm tannins and high levels of acidity and alcohol, with the capacity to age for many years.

One of the world's most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. Chateau Margaux, 1964

Margaux, 1er Grand Cru Classe (very top shoulder)

Critic tasting note: "If this was not the wine of the day it came real close. The unnaturally red color has only some orange nuances on the edge. The bouquet is an explosion of balsamic sensations, holly, tanned leather and lots of spice. The pepper is abundant as are the sensations of blood in the background. The mouthfeel is still taut thanks to an epic yet not invasive acidity that is in perfect balance within a structure of unique elegance. The fine and thick tannins have by now settled but tactilely lift everything to a higher level. A wine dreams are made of." - 99/100, Doctorwine

The red wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape blossom and reach their prime between their third and fifth year, but their potential for aging is over ten years and more according to the vintage and storage conditions. Their color changes from intense garnet-purple in the early years to ruby after some cellaring. These wines are structured, with powerful and complex aromas of ripe fruit, mushrooms, truffles, underbrush, spicy notes, and wild animals.
