The weather conditions during the the 1984 growing season were challenging across Europe with variable weather patterns leading to an uneven ripening and difficulties with grape maturation. As a result, the majority of Bordeaux and Italian wines from this vintage tend to lack the richness and concentration found in better years. In Portugal's Douro Valley, where Port wine is produced, the 1984 vintage was a good one, but not widely declared.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Messias 1984 Quinta Cachao
  • 1984 Ryst Dupeyron Reserve Joseph Millesime vintage Armagnac.
  • DOliveiras Madeira 1984 Verdelho
  • Dao 1984 Porta Dos Cavaleiros

Bordeaux: The Bordeaux vintage got off to a good start with a warm April. Things quickly went downhill after that; May was cool and rainy which led to poor flowering particularly for the Merlot crop. This had follow on problems in the Right Bank (St Emilion, Pomerol), as there was not enough ripe Merlot to create quality Bordeaux wine. The producers in the Left Bank tended to over compensate with more Cabernet Sauvignon. By the time July arrived, the vintage was lagging behind. July and August were warm, dry months which helped the left bank chateaux into thinking the vintage would end up fine, if their wines were Cabernet Sauvignon based. In September, Cyclone Hortense hit the Bordeaux wine region, the first in its history. Many right bank Chateau declassified their entire crop in St. Emilion and Pomerol. The left bank fared slightly better but the wines produced were diluted; few have survived today and those that have are now quite a rarity.

Italian: A challenging vintage that produced some good wines in Piedmont by those producers that adopted strict selection techniques. Some weaker wines were produced in Tuscany. The first three months of the year were cool. Although the weather in April was better, May was cold, cloudy and wet causing problems for bud-break. Flowering was therefore delayed by two to three weeks. The ripening process was hampered as a result of an unsettled summer, however the vintage was salvaged partly by a warm final ripening period for Barolo. In Tuscany this was Chianti's first vintage under the new quality enhancing DOCG laws. This was a poor vintage and no Riservas were made. Producers had to rely heavily on concentrated and severe selection to produce acceptable wines.

Portugal: A 1984 Port would make an excellent 40 year old wine gift, whether for a birthday or anniversary. Although there was no declaration of vintage this year, some attractive single Quinta ports were produced. These bottles are by now fully mature but will keep for years. The 1984 vintage started off with a cold wet spring, with summer not really starting until June. The first three weeks of September were fine, hot and dry, but at the end of September the temperature dropped sharply and it never recovered. However, there was good weather in the final part of the harvest and the winemakers' skills were tested in order to produce a good wine. Some excellent examples of the winemakers' talent are around, such as Messias, Warre, Dow and Fonseca. Some excellent single-harvest Colheitas were also produced.

    Palmer Port

    40 Year Old Tawny Port

    Exclusive to VWP.

Tasting Notes: The Palmer 40 Year tawny is a careful blend of many traditional grape varieties from selected vineyards in various areas of the Douro Demarcated Region, patiently aged to resemble the taste of a port that was aged for 40 years in old oak casks. The 40 Year old has a pronounced aroma intensity that is very rich with nuts and baked cherry. There is further complexity of nutmeg and cream. On the palate the wine is very balanced between acidity and sweetness that gives a luxurious mouthfeel. Lovely richness of fruitcake, fig, baked plum, caramel and toffee. There are also notes of plum, cherry, cooked strawberry.

    Tasting Notes:
The NV +40 Year Old Tawny Porto is a field blend bottled in 2014 with 114 grams of residual sugar and a bar-top cork. Personally, I like the 30 slightly more, but there are some stylistic differences and they are both very fine. The 30 is livelier and crisper. However, this +40 is distinguished by that "+.

The 1984 Dupeyron Armagnac is the expression of a single year and has a unique character associated with the year and the cask in which it has been stored. These vintages are bottled at the alcohol level in which they naturally come out of the cask. There is a wonderful contrast between the sweet and sour flavours of wood, amplified by the strong alcoholic degree. Rich palate feeling the alcohol and the concentration of dry plums, spicy with persistent flavour of rancio and of spices, but round, soft and long in the finish. The tannins are very present, but full-bodied and round.

The Maison Ryst-Dupeyron was founded by Joseph Dupeyron in 1905.

Bright brown colour, with greenish nuances. Presents a bouquet with intense aromas of dried fruits, delicate spices notes and a sweet touch of honey. In the taste it is full, unctuous and velvety. This wine overflows seduction and an enormous refinement. A feeling that is extended in the long and complex finish.

This 40-year-old wine owes its name, Tordiz, to the confluence of the Torto and Mendiz rivers. It is obtained from wines that have been carefully aged in small oak casks and later blended in a small upstanding oak vat dating from 1864.

    Reviews:
Dark tawny with orangey-red highlights. I wouldn't quite call it mahogany in colour, but it's close. Very dark, and lots of brown.
Nose: As is typical, lots of (to me) Madeira-like notes. Some leather, some dark aromatic wood like sandalwood, some apricot, and a bit of spirit.

Very pale amber/tawny/orange colour. Fine and delicate aromas of hazelnuts and candied citrus. Quince marmalade character, delicate in style, with finesse and poise. Seemingly quite dry in style towards the finish (not as obviously rich as some here), and supremely refined.

Bourgogne Rouge is the term used to apply to red wines from Burgundy that fall under the generic Bourgogne AOC, which can be produced by over 350 individual villages across the region. As with Bourgogne Blanc and Bourgogne Rosé, this is a very general appellation and thus is hard to pinpoint any specific characteristics of the wine as a whole, due to the huge variety of wines produced.Pinot Noir is the primary grape used in Bourgogne Rouge production, although Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and in Yonne, César grapes are all also permitted to make up the rest of the wine.

    Chateau d'Yquem, 1984

    Sauternes 1er Cru Classe
    Individual Yquem Wooden Case

Yquem is indisputedly the best wine in Sauternes and may well be the finest sweet wine in the world.

Reviews "1984 is a surprisingly good year made under very trying conditions. D'Yquem began its harvest on October 15th and made its last pass through the vineyards on November 13th. Seventy-five percent of the crop was retained for d'Yquem. The wine at present exhibits a great deal of smoky oak in its bouquet, which is also filled with scents of smoked almonds, cooked pineapples, and honey and caramel. In the mouth, the wine is less flamboyant, with less glycerin and power than usual, but it is still a rich, full-bodied d'Yquem with a great deal of personality and character.

Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

    Graham's Port, 1984

    Quinta dos Malvedos Vintage Port
    Grahams Library stock release

The 1984 Grahams Malvados has been stored in Grahams cellars until purchase by VWP in 2021 - The bottles are in exceptional condition.

The 1984 still has some youth evident on the colour. A delightful, fruit-laden nose, which takes considerable time in the glass to open up. Macerated black fruits and figs, covered in a thin layer of chocolate. Rich, full bodied, but quite forward and fruit dominated on the palate. A lovely texture, quite creamy and sweet, to match this fruit. Some powerful tannins in the background, although these really do play a minor role, only showing on the finish.

At the heart of Graham’s Vintage Ports are the wines from the company’s famed Quinta dos Malvedos.
