Portugal: A hot summer and a pandemic led to a small production of very good concentrated wines.
The Douro experienced above average temperatures for most of the year with a record July, a worrying sign of global warming. This resulted in harvesting at the end of August - a couple of weeks earlier than usual. Yields are low at the best of times but 2020 produced only a tiny crop of super concentrated grapes. Factor in labour shortages, social distancing logistics issues caused by the pandemic and the production was tiny. Vesuvio and a few others that traditional trod their grapes in lagares did not produce a vintage!
Those producers who did produce a vintage Port generally made a stunningly dark, concentrated wine similar to the 2009 vintage. Symington Family released a small quantity of Graham and Warre's Old Vines. Noval declared as did Quevedo and a few others. Notable exceptions were Taylor-Fladgate who produced single quintas that will be released in future years and Sogrape who did not produce a vintage port for Offley, Ferreira or Sandeman.

The 2020 Vintage marks the tenth consecutive Vintage Port release from Quinta do Noval, in line with their long-held belief that the quality of the vintage, not the market, should be the only determining factor in whether a Vintage Port is made. In the case of 2020, Christian Seely describes these wines as “exceptional”, with a hot and dry summer resulting in an unusually early harvest and higher residual sugars. The wines display an “unusually powerful and rich style but nevertheless retain the purity and freshness of Pinhao valley fruit that are typical of Noval wines”.

Quinta de Ervamoira Vintage Port is produced only in exceptional years from the best plots of Quinta de Ervamoira, located in the Douro Superior. The total area of the quinta is 234 ha with 178 ha under vine and an average age of 30 years. Ervamoira lies in a rocky area on the banks of the river Côa, where the weather is hot and dry, adding density and body to the wines, resulting in full-bodied and highly concentrated wines. The 2020 Altano Douro wine is full bodied but soft textured, this Dourored is incredibly moreish, full of rich red fruits and spices. Grapes are sourced from the Symington family’s own Dour Valley vineyards.
Altano is a blend of Tinta Roriz that provides the rich berry fruit and Touriga Franca that adds a lifted floral character, the majority of the blend was aged in American and French oak casks to soften up the muscular tannin of the Douro grapes so the wine is ready for immediate drinking. An exceptionally good, everyday wine.

Casa Ferreirinha Vinha Grande Red 2020 is ruby red with purple tinges. The aroma is intense, predominantly redcurrant and plum, along with spice, resin and cedar, all very well integrated with subtle oak. It is a well-balanced wine with firm, well-textured tannins and bright, attractive acidity. Its finish is very long and harmonious.
This producer, founded in 1952, is named after the legendary Porto matriarch Dona Antónia Ferreira. She was affectionately nicknamed 'Ferreirinha' by her countrymen, and Casa Ferreirinha, the first producer in the region dedicated to making light wines, pays homage to her memory. …
