Tawny Port

Winemaking:
Hand-picked at the optimum time, the grapes are then destemmed, crushed and converted into wine through a process of careful maceration to extract their colour, tannins and aromas, enhanced by constant churning during fermentation. A rare bottling of Cabral 1871 port. Bottled in the 1970's from cask. Tasted by Michael Broadbent in 2001 with the following comments "Pale tawny indicating many, possibly 50 years, in wood; slightly varnishy on the nose but still sweet and delicious."

This Port was bought from The Dower House, Tewkesbury and whilst they do not have labels and the capsules are plain, the port dates from 1871 (bottled in the 1970s); please ask for further details. One bottle from this collection was previously opened; the cork for which had the date of 1871 and Cabral which is Serafim Cabral of Quinta de Loueiro. …

Tasting notes: The 1977 Calem Vintage Port is an orange-tinged pale tawny colour. A powerful nose of light dried fruit, morello cherry, roasted coffee and caramel. This 1992 Vintage Port from Calem has outstanding provenance! This bottle has been stored at the Calem cellars on Porto since bottling.

The 1992 Calem Quinta da Foz is a beautiful tawny colour indicating maturity. On the nose it has chocolate and creme caramel together with a candied notes. On the palate this is quite complex - medium bodied with well integrated, tannins. A little sweeter than some ports but showing well. Long, long finish. This is in a good place and should hold well for the next decade or so. (VWP note - tasting May 2019)

The nose denotes intense and persistent aromas of red berries fruit such as black cherry, cherry macerated in alcohol and blueberry as well as an intense and pleasing aroma of violet and hints of vanilla on the finish.
