Carinena, 1972

Don Ramon

Carinena is just one of several DO titles used for the wines of Aragon, northern Spain. Winemaking in the area dates back to at least Roman times, and records from that era confirm that locals drank Carinena wines mixed with honey. Many other historical records attest to the quality of the wines from Carinena; King Ferdinand I of Aragon listed it as his preferred wine above all others and the French philosopher Voltaire thought it heavenly. Wine has long been the economic mainstay of the region and a source of great pride and renown.

Carruades de Chateau Lafite, 1990

Pauillac

Carruades is the second label wine produced by Chateau Lafite-Rothschild.
After fermentation and maceration, the wines are tasted, selected and put together according to their different qualities. This step is very important because this is where we make the difference between the great "Lafite" and the second wine "Carruades de Lafite". The wines are drained off into oak barrels. We use 100% new barrels for the ageing of Lafite. The year after, these same barrels will be used for the Carruades.

Carruades de Château Lafite is the celebrated second wine of the iconic Château Lafite Rothschild, situated in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux, France.

Castel del Monte, 1970

Chiddo Bitonto
Clearance Offer - Last Bottle | Was £89 | Now £41.50

Castel del Monte is a DOC of the Puglia wine region in south-eastern Italy. In a region where only a small proportion of vineyards take up the DOC titles to which they are entitled, Castel del Monte is one of the more promising. The 'Castle on the Hill' referred to in the name is precisely that - an octagonal fortification built in the 13th century which overlooks the landscape for miles around. The castle itself has less of a promising future than the wines made in its name, as over the centuries it has been used as a prison, a plague shelter and finally a source of marble and stone for opportunistic locals.

Cavendish port (South Africa), 1949

South Africa, tawny Port

South African fortified red wines have a long and distinguished history dating from the early 19th century, not long after the creation of modern Port in Portugal. As the Portuguese port industry obtained an embargo on calling anything 'port' not emanating from Portugal, this fortified wine from the Cape has to be called 'Vin de Liqueur'. Today many of the fortified red producers, concentrated around Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo, use Portuguese varietals and make wines that compete in quality with similar wines made in Portugal.

As can be seen on the label, the text relates "The wine of a single outstanding vintage in the Cape, which has been late bottled in this country after over 30 years maturation in oak wood".

Chateau Batailley, 1973

Pauillac 5th Growth Classification

1973 Château Batailley – A Mature Bordeaux for the Curious Collector
The 1973 Château Batailley is a wine from a vintage that had its challenges, yet it remains an interesting piece of Bordeaux history. As a fifth-growth estate in Pauillac, Château Batailley is known for its structured, Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines, built for aging. However, the 1973 growing season was marked by wet conditions later in the summer, leading to lighter, more delicate wines with softer tannins and a less concentrated profile than in stronger vintages.

Now, over 50 years later, the 1973 Château Batailley is likely well past its peak, with faded fruit and a more tertiary-driven character.

Pauillac – Fifth Growth (Grand Cru Classé 1855)
