Taylor's Port, 1974

Late Bottled Vintage Port

The 1974 Late Bottled Vintage Port from taylors shows a medium intense color with slight orange tinge at the rim. Nose of wood, anise, deep berry notes, faint clove and lots more. Rich mouthfeel w/slight woodiness, rich dried fruits of cherry, blackberry, Plum and dates. Big in the mouth with a strong alcohol finish. this kept developing for at least 2 hours showing candied cherries later on.

Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour.

Quinta da Devesa, 1973

Sale

Finest Reserve White Port
In own presentation box | 50cl Bottle
** Special Offer | Was £129 | Now £89 **
Offer Ends June 2024

The Quinta da Devesa White Port is our best selling 1973 wine. Made with grapes from the 1973 harvest and matured in cask until bottling in 2022, this is a fabulous white Port that is golden in colour, with a nose of sweet spices, iodine, wood notes and candied citrus. The palate is elegant, bright and offers a nice acidity, with citrus and honey, backed with concentrated old wood notes of cedar and walnut. A stylish finish with notes of lemon zest and molasses. Highly recommended!

1973 Devesa Reserve White Port is actually a 1973 Colheita White Port but has to be bottled under 'Reserve' label as the barrel was put aside for family and friends and so was not formally registered.

Fonseca Port, 1973

Crusted Port - Bottled in 1973

A very rare bottle of 1973 crusted port.

Crusted Port is a very small category, named because of the 'crust' of sediment that it forms in the bottle. Invented by the British-owned Port houses predominantly for the British Port drinker, it is intended to be a more economical alternative to Vintage or Late Bottled Vintage. Crusted is a blend of several harvests, which are bottled without being filtered and laid down to mature like Vintage wines. Using this approach allows the manufacturer to use some of the lesser harvests but still produce a good rich full bodied wine at an economical price.

Quinta Das Carvalhas, 1970

Vintage Port
Quinta das Carvalhas

From the outstanding 1970 vintage. The colour is more tawny than red, and fairly light. It gives the distinct impression of a very old, very mature vintage Port. The nose gives a strong impression of honey and is followed by sweet grapes and soft red fruits. Very slightly spirity, but not so much that it interferes. This all changes after 5 hours as the honey and fruits nearly vanish and the nose became spirity.

Palate: Very soft and elegant with a very faint smokey note. There's more "sweet" to it than anything else, but it's not a pure sugary sweetness but rather the remains of a sweet fruit compote.
