Barolo, 1989

Agostino Mascarello

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Baron de Sigognac, 1989

Armagnac (Comes in original Sogognac Box as illustrated)

The company behind this Armagnac owns one of the most important stocks of old vintages in the whole region. They are growers as well as distillers and specialise in sourcing and ageing old casks of Armagnac.

The Armagnac is made from a blend of Baco and Ugni Blanc, the predominant grapes used in the production of Armagnac. The distillation takes place in a column still to an alcohol strength of about 54%. The spirit is then aged in local black oak casks. The alcohol content then reduces naturally to about 40% after about forty years.

Barros Port

30 Year Old Tawny Port

The 30 year old Barros port is an absolute delight. It has a flavour of raisins, prunes, cherries a little cinnamon. As a port it is surprisingly light considering its age in that it doesn’t have a heaviness to it. The mouth feel is quite light, approachable and drinkable. The finish is very long - this is an excellent wine.

Cabernet, 1989

Quinta do Poço do Lobo MAGNUM

Caves S. Joao, established in 1920, became a dominant force in Portuguese wine making in the early 20th century with their houses Porta dos Cavaleiros in Dao and Frei Joao in Bairrada. Given the shifting trends in consumer preferences, Bairrada and Dao fell to obscurity in the 1990s when critical influence drove the demand for bigger, extracted, warmer climate wines. As in all things, however, what comes around goes around! Sure enough, 20 years later savvy consumers and food-conscious sommeliers are looking for finesse and freshness and heading back to Bairrada and Dao. Wines that when young had a vegetal character,

Champagne, 1989

Perrier Jouet - Belle Epoque

"In 1902, Henri Gallice – the owner of Maison Perrier-Jouët – asked his friend Emile Gallé to design a bottle set with anemones in arabesques. This bottle was to languish for more than 60 years in a cupboard of the house, as nobody was able to reproduce it. One day in 1964, a glass craftsman rediscovered the secret of its manufacture, enabling the precious original to be reproduced. Thus, since 1969 the "Cuvée Belle Epoque", for which this bottle is now the vessel, is now home to Perrier-Jouët's most remarkable of champagnes, combining fullness and refinement."

Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1989

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 95 Points Wine Journal ***

Reviews"The Mouton ’89 is a lovely Pauillac that has reached its plateau of maturity. It has an engaging cedar-scented bouquet touches of cigar box, mint and a touch of Italian cooked meats. Very well defined, very “old school”. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious with grainy tannins. It continues the aromatic theme of cedar and tobacco, relatively foursquare compared to Pichon-Baron of Lynch Bages, with a slightly leafy finish that demonstrates great persistency. It is very “classic” in style, restrained, elegant and bearing similarities to Lafite.

Chateau Pavie, 1989

St Emilion, Premier Grand Cru Classe

"The 1989 displays a deep ruby/garnet color with no signs of amber at the edge. It offers up an exotic, spicy, fruitcake, earthy, chocolatey nose with sweet woodsy aromas in the background. Long and youthful, with noticeably hard tannin, this medium-bodied, concentrated 1989 appears to be a slowly evolving wine. With another 2-3 years of bottle age, it may merit an outstanding score. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016." Parker, WIne Advocate 1997

Dolcetto d'Alba, 1989

Michele Ferrero - Montersino

A native black grape variety of Northern Italy grown almost exclusively in the provinces of Cuneo and Alessandria in Piedmont. It is relatively easy to cultivate, although it is susceptible to fungal diseases. It ripens before Barbera and Nebbiolo and is often grown in high north-facing sites which would be unsuitable for Nebbiolo. The finest Dolcetto wines come from grapes grown on soils rich with white marls, especially those found on the right bank of the River Tauro. The wines generally are low in tannins and acidity and are usually fruity and fragrant, often with hints of almonds.

El Maestro Sierra, 1989

30 year old Oloroso Sherry Extra Viejo, in individual wooden presentation cases

This Oloroso Sherry is aged for 30 years in the solera system.

Incredibly complex aromas of hazelnuts and exotic spices. This richly textured wine is complex with nuances of nuts and spicy elements.

Located in the centre of Jerez de la Frontera, Bodegas El Maestro Sierra resides at one of the highest elevations in town. This allows the bodega to receive warm, humid winds that arrive from the sea, aiding in a better climate for the growth of flor, which remains active the whole year round.

Inferno, 1989

Fratelli Bettini

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

Kopke Port, 1989

Vintage Port

A very rare bottle of Kopke VP. This is one of those noses where you can keep going back and finding things you think it smells like. I really like that. A bit punchy initially with it's alcohol, the finish is where this wine really shines. Starts off as fresh popcorn, turning hazelnuts and honey, then granola and brown sugar..... off into a 40-second long finish with various evolution in which I am sure different people would find different things. Truly delicious. This wine is very, very good. I love it when a wine forces you to think about it, and this does just that. Captivating, complex, intense and delicious.

Kopke Port

30 Year Old Tawny Port - 75cl (Includes Kopke presentation box)

Kopke Port is the oldest port house. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League, the House has been run through the generations by several representatives of the Kopke family, obtaining an excellent reputation for its wines.

Tasting Notes:
Soft, rich but not unctuous. Lovely balance of dried apricots & nutty complexity. Good poise with an attractive nose, great age and perfect balance. Perhaps the finest 30 year old we ever tasted - layers of caramel, penuche and butterscotch -an extremely refined blend.
