Chateau Cos d'Estournel, 1988

St Estephe, 2nd Growth Classification

A year which was marked by a great lack of water in summer and by harvesting carried out in perfect conditions.
1988 is a vintage typical of the Médoc. Built like a Romanesque cathedral with all that is necessary to seduce in conditions of austerity. A very generous, wild bouquet with hints of red fruits, roast, pear, bilberry, fur, liquorice. Full and concentrated in the mouth, it is stout and very munchy. An imposing finish. A wine which will benefit greatly as it ages.

Chateau La Lagune, 1988

Sale

Grand Cru Classe Medoc
Special Offer | Was £89.95 | Now £49.95

From the good 1988 vintage and scoring 85/100 Parker points, "La Lagune's 1988 has a streak of herbaceousness, and tart, aggressive tannins that appear to have the upper hand in the wine's balance. Medium-bodied, spicy, and straightforward, it lacks the flesh and chewy opulence of top vintages of La Lagune, but it should prove to be long-lived. "Drink now - 2023.

Chateau La Tour de Grenet, 1988

Lussac St Emilion

This 1988 wine has been made to be enjoyed. The substance is ripe but not too jam-like, the structure has a delicate character, while the wine is imposing overall. It is velvety smooth, with good colour, with fruity and floral aromas.

The tower, built in the 19th century, gave its name to the vineyard. The property belonged to the Abbaye de Faize in the 16th century. In 1970, it became the property of the BRUNOT family. As a result of its remarkably sunny position on one of the highest slopes of the region and of its clay-limestone soil, the vines produce grapes which give a full bodied wine , full of vigour that keep extremely well.

The 1988 Château Labégorce-Zédé displays a clear medium intensity ruby red colour slowly turning into garnet. It reveals a maturing nose of tobacco, dark fruit and an herbal note. The palate is spicy with vanilla tones, high tannin, medium acidity and medium length. A nice claret.

Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1988

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe,

1988 produced richly coloured Cabernet and Merlot wines, that are tannic and powerfully structured. A great vintage, gorgeously seductive and remains the most complex wine of this Century, the quintessence of Lafite-Rothschild.

This deeply colored wine exhibits the telltale Lafite bouquet of cedar, subtle herbs, dried pit fruits, minerals, and cassis. Extremely concentrated, with brillantly focused flavors and huge tannins, this backward yet impressively endowed Lsfite Rothschild may well turn out to be the wine of the vintage. Anticipated maturity:2000-2035
Score: 94 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (95),

Chateau Larmande, 1988

New

St Emilion Grand Cru

Still a beautiful and vibrant wine after 30 years. Definitely does not disappoint and shows little signs of age. '89 is a great vintage and still shines well here. Traditional French style with lower 13% alcohol. It has quite a bit of life left in it.

Chateau Lascombes, 1988

Margaux 2nd Growth Classification

A beautiful example. On opening a beautiful cedar bouquet, but subdued in the mouth; after a couple of hours in the decanter this is really singing, still some red fruit, some meat, and that classic mature Bordeaux feel. Cellar Tracker Review.

Chateau Latour, 1988

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

91 points - Robert Parker
92 Points - Wine journal

"The best showing yet for a wine from this under-rated vintage, the dark garnet-coloured 1988 Latour reveals slight amber at the edge. A bouquet of melted tar, plums, black currants, cedar, and underbrush is followed by a sweet entry, with medium to full body, excellent ripeness, and mature tannin. It is a classic, elegant Latour with more meaty, vegetable-like flavours than are found in a riper year, such as 1989 and 1990. The 1988 has just begun to enter its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for 25 years. Anticipated maturity: now-2025" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 2000.

Chateau LeTertre Roteboeuf, 1988

St Emilion Grand Cru Classe

***92 Points, Robert Parker***

A sleeper vintage for proprietor Mitjavile’s beloved Tertre Roteboeuf, the 1988 has a deep plum/garnet color and a gorgeous nose of earth, underbrush, cherry cough syrup, licorice, and caramel. It is full-bodied, very pure, ripe, with loads of concentration, yet good definition and structure. No, it is not as dense as the 1989 nor as flamboyant and flashy as the 1990, but this is a classic Tertre Roteboeuf that should continue to drink well for a few more years.

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1988

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe

*** 92 Parker Points ***

One of the big surprises is how delicious this wine has turned out. It is a beautiful, classic claret. Dark ruby-colored with purple hues, it reveals aromas of dried herbs, smoke, leather, grilled meats, and copious black cherry and currant fruit. Medium-bodied, powerful, rich, and surprisingly evolved, this vintage has now hit its plateau of maturity.

Reviews.
"Slight aging on rim. A rich nose of minerals and blackcurrant. Medium-bodied with classic Mouton style. This has more fleshy fruit than other Firsts: quite rounded blackberry and tar. Very Cabernet dominated with a little more expression that Lafite 1988. A classic claret in every sense." Neil Martin

Ogier & Fils - Cuvee de la Reine Jeanne

A very good CNDP from the good 1988 vintage. The wine still has a deep core. On the nose there is lots of jammy fruit particularly strawberry jam and forest floor. It tastes like strawberry jam, forest floor, coffee and chocolate. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity. Drink now.

Nebbiolo D'Alba, 1988

Terre del Barolo - MAGNUM 1,5 litre -

The Nebbiolo d'Alba has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Bordeaux, in the south-west of France, needs little introduction to anyone with an interest in wine. One of the world's most prolific wine regions, it also manages to rank among the most famous and prestigious. Chateau Chemin Royal, 1987

New

Cru Bourgeois Moulis en Medoc

Château Chemin Royal is produced from the Moulis en Médoc part of Château Fonréaud’s vineyard. The name Fonréaud that used to be spelt “Font Reaux” means “Royal Spring”. According to the legend, a king of England stopped on this spot in the XIth century to quench his thirst at a spring that he found there. But perhaps the name is owed simply to the existence of a pleasant cold-water spring in the park. Henri Le Blanc de Mauvesin built the chateau in 1855 according to plans drawn by the architect Garros. It will charm you by the elegance of its architecture. Leo Chanfreau bought the estate in 1962.
