Bordeaux: An outstanding vintage, against which others are often compared. The 1970 is the best vintage between the outstanding years of 1961 and 1982. Perfect weather led to huge crop that set a record at the time, but was also of a high quality across all regions. The wines generally have a dark colour, are fragrant, have full body and a richness of fruit. The wines produced are consistent and will continue to drink well for decades to come.

Italian: The Italian 1970 wine vintage was an outstanding one for the wine regions of Tuscany and Piedmont. The 1970 wine vintage produced rich, structured, full bodied wines that are still drinking well today. In Tuscany the spring was unusually cold resulting in a late bud break. This was mitigated by a long hot summer which continued well into autumn. The producers took advantage to harvest late, obtaining very good sugar levels. The vintage was excellent for Chianti and Brunello. In Piedmont It was a very good vintage obscured by legendary 1971 vintage. Barolo, Barbaresco, Nebbiolo all shine through.

Amarone della Valpolicella, 1970

Cantina Sociale di Monteforte

This wine is made from grapes harvested in various vineyards located on hills in the Valpolicella zone (Mezzane and Tregnago hills). Bouquet: notes of vanilla and ethereal airs depending on the period of aging in the barrel; notes of sweet fruits such as currants, blueberries, cherries depending on the varieties of grapes. Barolo Prandi, 1970

Cantine Prandi, Barolo, Piedmont - LAST LIBRARY STOCK

The 1970 Barolo Cantine Prandi have come from the producer's cellars where they have laid undisturbed since bottling.

Cantine Prandi was established in the 1920s when grandfather Farinetti Majorino envisioned selling part of the wine produced for family use to the commercial market. In the 1960's his nephew Giovanni came to lend a hand and was instrumental in shaping the winery and its future development. Up to 2009, Giovanni's son Alessandro looked after the beautiful vineyards situated in the long hills surrounding Piemonte. In recent years, due to Alessandro's passing, the winery ceased production.

Barolo, 1970

Marchesi Prioli, Barolo, Piedmont

Barolo is known as the 'king of wines' and is made from the Nebbiolo grape. Heady aromas of rose, leather, vanilla, cherry, pepper, cranberry, strawberry. Fruits are perfectly knitted with the tannins and acidity. It's a powerful wine but remarkably subtle. Don't underestimate it and certainly serve it with food to show at it's best. Nebbiolo has naturally high tannins and acidity, so it will take on full-flavoured, rich foods no problem at all.

Taylor's Port, 1970

Vintage Port
Excellent Levels

The 1970 Taylor's Vintage Port is a consistently high performer and rated as one of the best of the 1970 ports.

99 points Wine Enthusiast
This wine's dark garnet color with minimal bricking suggests a relatively youthful wine and this certainly could age longer, although it's also delicious now. Wonderfully complex floral and herbal scents easily move into deep, rich flavors of chocolate and cherries, sprinkled with a healthy dose of Douro minerality and spice. Drink or hold. (JC) (2/2007)

98 points Vinous
The 1970 Taylor's Vintage Port has a tight nose, youthful with notes of liquorice, raisin, boot-polish and lemongrass.

Vecchio Maniero, 1970

Marchesi di Barolo, Barolo, Piedmont
*** BIG GALLON BOTTLE OF 3,78 LITERS ***

This wine from the good 1970 vintage is made with the long lived Nebbiolo grape. this is a black-skinned red wine grape variety most famous for creating the 'tar and roses' scent of Barolo wines from Piedmont, north-western Italy. The grape's very name is evocative of its home among the misty foothills of the western Alps; the nebbia (Italian for 'fog') after which it is named frequently arrives on early October mornings, when the Nebbiolo harvest is in full swing.

Sangiovese di Romagna, 1970

Cesari
** BIG BOTTLE OF 3,78 LITERS **

Good-quality Sangiovese is prized for its high acid, firm tannins and balanced nature. Savory flavors of dark cherries and black stone fruit are characteristic, and may be backed by secondary notes of tomato leaf and dried herbs. The use of oak has become more popular and this coaxes richer flavors from the grapes, tending toward plum and wild raspberry.

Nebbiolo, 1970

Antonio Carpignano
RARE BIG GALLON BOTTLE OF 3.78 Lt

The Nebbiolo has a lovely earthy bouquet. The nose has cherries, dark cherries, tar and slight dried rose notes. Complex and layered. Nice acidity. Medium tannins still present. Cherries on the palate too. Nice finish. Great food wine. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones.

Chateau Haut Brion, 1970

Pessac Leognan 1er Grand Cru Classe
Damaged labels

*** 90-92 points - Wine Journal ***

Reviews: "Brown rim. Brown sugar, olives and leather nose. Quite rich for 1970. Balanced and very smooth palate. Coffee & sweet red fruits. Fully mature, a highly enjoyable wine (and far cheaper than Latour.) Somewhat under-rated by others. Then again chez Alex Hunt in November 2005. Although a little musty at first, this wine grows and grows on you. A cool, blackberry leaf, cranberry nose with lots of cedar and pine is followed by a tannic, almost rustic, broad-shouldered palate with cedary, tobacco-infused fruit. Very classic in style but suited the venison perfectly.

Quinta do Noval Nacional, 1970

Vintage Port
Stencil damaged

Quinta do Noval Nacional is undoubtedly one of the most legendary fortified wines in the world. It is produced from a small area at the heart of the Quinta do Noval vineyard planted with ungrafted vines that have remained untouched by Phylloxera

Another amazing bottle! Still very concentrated and vibrant. Layers and layers of complexity becoming perceptible... Concentrated cherry juice, dried raisins, confit fruits.

Robert Parker 96 Points.
The 1970 Nacional remains a young, unevolved wine, as well as the lightest and least intense of the 1970, 1963 and 1962. That is not to suggest it is a wimpish wine as it is a powerful vintage port, but it is unbelievably graceful, youthful, and complex.

Croft Port, 1970

Vintage Port
Clearance Offer | Rewaxed | Torn label | Upper Shoulder | Was £139 | Now £75

The 1970 Croft Vintage port from the outstanding 1970 Vintage is a wonderful port scoring 91 points.

Reviews
A similar russet core, though a little clearer than the ’66. The nose has good definition and focus with an attractive bouquet of cooked meats, mulberry, spice and leather. Light and feminine, although it never really develops the nuance that I was hoping for in the glass. The palate is vigorous, note quite as elegant as the ’66, a little more alcoholic and unrefined, the finish more linear with liquorice, burnt toffee and raisin. Moderate length. Drinking now. Very fine. Neil Martin.

Butler Nephew Vintage Port, 1970

Vintage Port

The 1970 Butler Nephew Vintage is a top quality vintage port produced before the company was purchased by Gonzalas Byas and entered into decline. The wine is dark (60% opaque), light nose of candy and vanilla. Very sweet with a full body and serious backbone. A mixture of black cherries, raisins, dates and licorice on the palate overlaid with a little lavender. The backbone does balances some of the sweetness which leads to a long, long finish. TC (2019).

This House was founded by John Nash in Burmester, Nash & Co in 1730. In 1789 they dissolved partnership and James Butler was taken as partner and the firm became Nach, Butler & Co.

Gould Campbell Vintage Port, 1970

Vintage Port

Medium-deep but, interestingly, with more of a youthful purple tinge than the '75. Very sweet, fruity nose, slightly high-toned, tea-like. Fairly full on the palate, yet lean. Very flavoury. Michael Broadbent

Plenty of stuffing, with layers of elegant berry flavours and silky tannins. Deep ruby-red, with a blackberry and cherry nose, full-bodied, with medium tannins backng up a fine fruit structure, giving the wine an elegant backbone(James Suckling Vintage Year Book.)

Sweet, voluptuous bouquet. Coffee and cinnamon tastes. So beautifully balanced and elegant. Stunningly poised. A 1970 like this is sheer perfection and exactly what great, mature Vintage Port should be.
Serena Sutcliffe , CUISINE & WINE ASIA 2008 VOLUME 12
