In Tuscany, the Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile and Brunello had a very good year with a warm early Spring. The good weather conditions carried through to the harvest season with healthy, ripe fruit. In Piedmont prolonged rain caused serious problems, however a few producers still made good Barolo and Barbaresco wines.

Bordeaux: The 1994 vintage is generally rated as good but a little inconsistent. The top estates produced some very fine wines that are far superior to those in the poor years between 1991 and 1993. The best 1994 Bordeaux wines are characterised by high tannin levels with rich fruit and should mature well over the next few years.

Portugal: A 1994 Vintage Port makes a great 30 year old wine gift for a 30th birthday or anniversary: 1994 was one of the great vintages of the 20th Century that produced classic, monumental port wines with rich fruit character. While these wines can be approached in their youth, the best need 20 years in bottle, making them mature for drinking now or perfect to age for another 20 years. Our wine buyer highly recommends the 1994 Taylor's Vintage Port , an outstanding Vintage Port that scored an incredible 100 points from Wine Spectator and 97 from Robert Parker.

Spain: This was the ‘Aaah!’ vintage; after three years of drought and indifferent quality, nature relented and provided one of the best vintages of the century (compared by many producers with the legendary 1964). The grapes showed tremendous ripeness, colour and extract. This was a truly great vintage in the making, although (or perhaps because) it was relatively low in quantity.

This Year in History: Fun Fact: BBC One broadcasts the first episode of sitcom The Vicar of Dibley, created by Richard Curtis for Dawn French, who plays the title role & Amazon was founded.
Eurovision Winner: Ireland with the song "Rock n Roll Kids" by Paul Harrington & Charlie McGettigan

Warre's Vintage Port, 1994

Vintage Port
Special Library Release
***17.5 Points- JancisRobinson.com***
***94 Points-Wine Advocate***

A very successful Vintage for Warre’s with several leading critics singing its praises shortly after the wine’s initial en primeur release. In October 1996, Robert Parker wrote, “One of the finest Warre’s I have ever tasted [...] This is a profound example of Warre’s Vintage Port.” Following nearly three decades of quietly ageing in the Symington family’s own reserve stocks in the Warre’s Vintage cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, the family have decided to release a limited quantity to provide lovers of fine wine with a unique opportunity to acquire and enjoy a Vintage Port that has aged under perfect conditions and is now at a perfect stage in its development.

Croft Port, 1994

Vintage Port
Heavily Bin Soiled Label

Quite meaty, quite a tarry and umami character, nuttiness too over the plummy fruit. Mouth-coating, full, creamy fruitiness and sweetness, a slick of cocoa, spice and quite long. Very lovely and resolved.

Quinta de la Rosa, 1994

Vintage Port

Quinta de La Rosa is a small estate in the heart of the Port wine-growing region in Alto Douro, near Pinhao, owned and operated by the Bergqvist family.

The Quinta and its vineyards were given to the Bergqvist family as a Christening present by the Feuerheerds, who established the property in 1906.

It remains one of the few Single Quinta where the vineyards start at the bank of the Douro and rise 450 meters to the towering top of the mountain. From the river's edge to the top, one passes through 11 different microclimates. This gives La Rosa great flexibility to add variety and complexity to its Ports.

Skeffington Port, 1994

Vintage Port

***91 Points- CellarTracker***

Fourth bottle from a half case purchased ten years ago and in fine fettle. Mature and drinking well now at 22 years of age, still vigorous and with gentle tertiary development in the form of some nutty warmth, ever so slightly stalky on the nose. Core of black cherries and dark chocolate on the palate, medium weight and intensity, light tannins, no excessive alcoholic heat, good length. A solid performance.
