Bordeaux Region Report

The Bordeaux wine region in southwestern France is a global symbol of exceptional winemaking, shaped by its geography and maritime climate. Bordered by the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, which merge into the Gironde Estuary, the region is divided into the Left Bank, Right Bank, and Entre-Deux-Mers. Its terroir and climate provide ideal conditions for cultivating both red and white grape varieties. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon dominate red blends, with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and others adding complexity. Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle lead white wine production, spanning crisp dry whites to sweet, botrytized masterpieces like Sauternes.

Bordeaux is home to over 60 appellations and several historic classification systems, including the 1855 Classification of Médoc and Sauternes, Graves, and the dynamic Saint-Émilion system. The Left Bank is renowned for structured Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wines from Médoc and Graves, while the Right Bank specializes in plush, Merlot-driven wines from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol. Entre-Deux-Mers focuses on dry white wines. Bordeaux’s wine styles range from full-bodied reds to elegant dry whites and luscious dessert wines, with each appellation offering distinct character and complexity.

Chateau Cissac, 2017

Medoc, Cru Bourgeois, Bordeaux
Includes Leather Effect Presentation Box
*** 90 Points- Wine Enthusiast ***

A 2017 vintage Bordeaux wine. This is the beauty of decent Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux if stored well - it makes demands on the taster (patience and consideration). Not a wine from those who prefer to 'pop and pour' who miss out on most of the quality and character.

The 2017 has a good rich colour - browning just a little at the rim. This bottle demands patience when opening as it needs time to develop. Good blackcurrant nose. Plum, damson on the palate with balancing blackcurrant acidity. Dusty tannins on the end palate at first but the tannin softened in the glass, even without food. With food it is excellent.

Chateau Latour, 2006

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe
***96 Points - Robert Parker***

Ch. Latour 2006 is the wine of the vintage. The pure, dark chocolate and cassis nose is followed by a palate of enormous intensity with lashings of cool blackberries and cream, minerals, cedar and coffee. The length of the finish is astonishing too - as if the wine is still in your mouth

The 2006 Château Latour has quite a vibrant bouquet with lively raspberry, wild strawberry, cedar and pencil lead scents that all gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, slightly chewy red berry fruit, a dash of spice, maybe a little tight towards the finish, unlike the Lafite-Rothschild and Mouton-Rothschild.

Chateau Beychevelle, 2005

*** 90 Points (Outstanding) Robert parker ***

Reviews
"The quintessentially elegant yet powerful 2005 may be the finest Beychevelle made since 1982. Its opaque ruby/purple color and sweet nose of camphor, blueberries, black currants, flowers, and crushed rocks precede a lovely, sweet, rich wine with zesty acidity delineating its medium to full-bodied personality, laser-like precision, and impressive purity and length. While this estate often does not live up to its pedigree, the 2005 is the real deal. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025+." Parker Wine Advocate 2007

Chateau Lynch-Bages, 2004

Half Bottle 37.5cl

An outstanding 2004 vintage Bordeaux wine from Chateau Lynch-Bages.

Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. This has a noticeably clear, deep garnet colour. The nose is very clean and correct although it lacks a little complexity and flair: straightforward black fruits, cedar and pencil shavings. The medium-bodied palate shows a little hardness at first, but softens with aeration and soon adopts a more succulent texture with ripe black cherries, Doris plum and bilberry. Certainly this is a well balanced Pauillac packed full of ripe tannins with a crisp poised finish of black plum, cedar and cassis.

Full bodied, dry and still surprisingly tannic on the palate, but good fruit extract and pitched acidity. The flavours are all deep red and black fruits, lots of black plum, a bit of bramble, charred oak, sous bois and chalk. Very smooth and nicely integrated. Finishes long, juicy and with lingering fruit. No where near past its prime. Drinking beautifully right now! (Cellar Tracker Review - 2021).

Deep garnet color. Perfumed, vibrant aromas of black cherry, cassis, leather and oak spice. Big, sweet and rich, with lush black cherry and black raspberry fruit already offering enticing inner-mouth flavor. Less oaky on the palate than on the nose. Just a hint of herbaceousness. Chateau Lynch-Bages, 1997

Pauillac 5me Cru Classe, Bordeaux

*** 88 Points - Neil Martin Wine Journal ***

Reviews:
"This has a superb nose, very lifted and well-defined, cedar, blackcurrant, smoke and a touch of burnt toast. Just soars from the glass. The palate is full-bodied, ripe tannins, beautiful balance and poise with a sense of controlled opulence towards the finish. It comes across very natural, black cherries, blueberry, a touch of orange zest. This is certainly an over-performing wine for the vintage and shows better than previous bottles, although it did fade a little when returning after 15 minutes in the glass. Drink now-2015. The 1988 Vieux Chateau Certan is a vintage that I have not tasted often, something I rue even more having been reacquainted with it. To be honest, for the first five minutes it felt overawed by the 1989. However, it soon gets its act together to deliver and gorgeous nose of black fruit, melted tar and cigar box, unashamedly classic in style, less sensual than the succeeding two vintages and yet extremely well defined. Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1986

Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classe

*** 100 Points - Parker ***

Deep garnet-black colour. An incredible array of aromas on the nose: blackberry, black cherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black olive and loam. The palate is absolutely seamless from first impression to finish, effortlessly building layers of complexity in the mouth and leading to a very long, earth and spice finish. I can’t see how this could possibly be improvement so have no alternative but concede perfection. Drink now to 2045+. Tasted March 2009" Parker Wine Advocate, 2009

Sweet aromas of jammy black fruits intermixed with roasted espresso and vanillin jump from the glass of this young, concentrated, full-bodied, succulent effort. Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1980

Paulliac 1er Cru Grand Classe

The 1980 Château Mouton Rothschild is a fascinating example of how even First Growth estates navigate the challenges of difficult vintages. This particular year was marked by variable weather across Bordeaux, including a wet spring and cool summer, which led to uneven ripening and modest fruit concentration. As a result, wines from the 1980 vintage, including Mouton Rothschild, are generally considered less powerful and less age-worthy than those from more acclaimed years. Yet, despite these hurdles, Mouton’s reputation and meticulous winemaking ensure that even its weaker vintages hold interest.

Chateau Rieussec, 1978

Sauternes 1er Cru Classe

Beautiful copper in colour with bouquet that can fill a room with apricots and gardenia with a hint of ocean breeze. In the mouth it is wonderfully delicious as most desert wines are but what set this apart is it's not so sweet with good firm tannin structure and a bit of honeydew and cinnamon on the back end. Also as with most desert wines the finish lingers for (seemingly) hours and butter, honey, and citrus coating your throat. This wine is absolutely wonderful.

Appearance: Likely a brick-tinged garnet or tawny rim, somewhat faded color intensity.

Aromas: Tertiary aromas will dominate. Think dried red / black fruits (dried cherry, plum), leather, forest floor, tobacco, old wood, possibly dried herbs. Some residual floral hints (rose, violet) might survive.

Palate / Structure: The primary fruit will be weak or receded. Tannins will be very soft (or perhaps somewhat mellowed to a gentle grip). Acidity will likely be low to moderate. The mid-palate may show earthiness, mushroom, underbrush, and that aged Bordeaux feel.

Finish & Complexity: The finish will probably be medium to short.
